I'm sure some of you have heard of Mythos before, but for those that haven't, its a free RPG with single and multiplayer developed by Flagship studios. A lot of the game designers came from Blizzard North, including Bill Roper. The game is intended to test out the netcode for Hellgate London.

Anyways, I just got into the beta and I'll post some impressions (within the limits of the NDA) after I get a chance to play it.

Anyone else interested in this game/got into the beta?

Oh yeah, if you're interested in joining the beta, wait a bit because open beta should start up in a few weeks.

1) Does it run well?
2) Is there much to this game?
3) Is it polished?
4) Is it always going to be free? How could they justify the expense?

hmmm, interesting.. character models look a bit dodgy from screenies, but spells and enviro look decent..
hows the multiplayer done? Similar to b.Net lobbies with max of 8 or so people?

1) Running it at max settings on a pretty old computer (fx-53, 6800 ultra, 1gb pc3200) and it goes smoothly except when I'm in town and there are 20-30 people running around.
2) Depends on what you mean by much. There are a ton of items and quests and maps to adventure on.
3) In the 2 hours I just played I haven't run into any real bugs. Had a bit of a pathfinding issue with my minions but that's pretty minor.
4) Yes, they will introduce the ability to pay for stuff though. Details are sketchy though.

Overall, the game is a lot of fun. I would say its Diablo gameplay + WoW "look" + some new cool stuff. I've played diablo 2 with my gf before and she was watching me play mythos, and she said that she thinks she'd rather play mythos. Take that for what you will

wait, so its an MMO? i had assumed not, since it was being compared to diablo + its free? if it is an MMO, it doesnt have 1 of those lame `item malls` for buying kit for rl cash does it?

It will be free in the sense that the game will be free, and the base content will be free. However all the "uber stuff" will require your hard earned greenbacks in the form of micropayments.

Its not an MMO, but towns act as hubs where everyone in the game can meet. Outside of town, every map and dungeon is an instance and separated from people. As for buying items, I think they said something like paid items could also be obtained in game since they want to cater to people with either time or money. Don't know how I feel about this, but at least its not too competitive so if some kid wants to spend 100 bucks on great gear it doesn't really affect me.

I'm all for buying things even if I've never done it. The only true commodity in an online game where progression matters is time. Some people have more money than time while others have more time than money. Take WoW for example, if Blizz offered to allow me to just purchase an epic flying mount I'd be all over it.

I don't know why OP said it was single player, its a free MMO game. You will get invited to beta as soon as you sign up, at least I did. hehe

Its not an MMO, every map where you fight stuff is instanced. Mythos is no more of an MMO than playing Diablo on B.Net is. Right now its multiplayer only since its purpose is to test out the HGL netcode. I mentioned single player since thats what I saw in its wiki entry, but it seems unlikely given that its meant to test out online infrastructure.

I think microtransactions are a great idea for games like these. I'd prefer something a little more granular then the way that Dungeon Runners does it. For example, have the game be free or really cheap per month and then have extras that cost money. Say you pick up a kick-ass sword and you want to use it, then you have to pay $.50 or $1. Say you want to be able to use the bank to store money or items, charge $1 or $2 for access to the bank. At some point the user has to decide if being a paying member is more economical or if paying as you go is the way to do it.

I would play WoW if they had another type of membership besides $15/mo. I just wouldn't have enough time to play the game to make the $15 worth it but if they had a "lite" version for less money I would do it.

This game only has content up to level 9. Its not an MMO, its more like Guild Wars meets Diablo. All the places are instanced, and the UI and controls are similar to that of Diablo. I've tried this game, and to be honest, I liked Diablo more. The reason is that Diablo allowed more interaction with different people, because you could meet them in chat channels, and trade channels, and the like outside of the actual game. Diablo also felt more open, and you didn't need to load a new "instance' every time you went to a new zone.
