This whole NForce4 is great, but moving to a PCIe graphics card is going to bankrupt me. I'm pretty happy with my 9700pro AGP card right now and it will cost me around $400 just to get a PCIe with similar performance now. I didn't even pay that much for my 9700pro 2 years ago. I don't know, I'm beginning to think that waiting for 90nm Athlon 64 chips with SSE3 and waiting for PCIe graphics cards to become reasonable is in the cards for me. It would be nice to have a new rig for Christmas though.

Is SSE3 worth waiting for? I'm about to build my first comp (to replace a 5 yr. old MicronPC)....I don't know too much about SSE3 and how much difference it will make....

They are both good cards. I have been waiting to upgrade for some time. My video card has been carried over for a LONG time. its a geforce3 (no Ti no nothing). I am waiting for the nforce4 to upgrade and will be purchasing a 6600gt as it presents great value and a huge step up.

For me, most games will run well with that card. I play WoW some farcry, some unreal 2k4. Even those play fine on my current comp if you can believe it

I have been ready to upgrade (money wise) for over a month. I wanted to be able to do the upgrade before december if possible but I am not sure that is happening.

I had no idea, thanks! I guess I'll look into a 6600gt. I haven't been up on all the reviews lately, and I assumed that the 9700pro with it's 256 bit memory bus and 8 rendering pipelines was pretty powerful compared to the mid-level newer cards (with less pipelines and 128 bit memory bus - which I also assumed incorrectly as it turns out that the 6600gt also has 8 pipelines).


Edit: Yeah it looks like the 6600gt spanks the 9700pro in every test. It does appear that the 128 bit memory bus does keep it below a 9800xt in a few games when taxed at 1600x1200 with 4xAA and 8x AF. That's something to worry a little about if I get a 21" LCD with 1600x1200 native resolution, but until then the 6600gt performs very well at the native resolution of my 17" display at 1024x1280 with 4xAA and 8x AF. Looks like I can make this upgrade after all!

yeah, the memory bandwidth does hurt a bit, but look at it this way - a 256-bit interface doubles performance, but the 9700 Pro has pretty slow memory. On the other hand, the 6600GT has 1GHz GDDR3, with some designs going as high as 1200MHz! This is why the 6800 is not that much faster, either. Throw in the newer, more efficient architecture of the geforce6 architecture, and that's why it can beat a 9800XT and absolutely own a 9700 Pro.

I think it's safe to assume that we're all in the same boat here. Mind if I grab an oar?

Between the nForce4 boards, the VIA K8T890 boards AND the ATi RX480 chipset-based boards, we're all gonna be fat n' happy in no time at all. The choices will be ours to make and they will most certainly be plentiful. We do, however, have a bit longer to wait for the "garden to sprout", so to speak. I figure that just after the first of the year, we'll be golden.

So, if you can hold out for another 8 to 10 weeks (yeah, I know), then I, you, we will be doin' one big happy dance. Additionally, by that time, more PCI-e video cards will be out and will most likely be a few bucks cheaper than they are now too.

The question is, how long are you willing to wait? I don't think another 8 to 10 weeks is really all that painful. Do you? The more companies (ASUS, ABit, Gigabyte, etc.) that crank out the various versions of their boards (Single, SLI and the like), the lower prices will be. They know that everyone is clammering for the latest and greatest and costs are reflective of this. Case in point: look at how expensive an enthusiast X800 XT PE costs. Need I say more. However, with more choices come lower prices. It's the good ol' "Supply and Demand" hittin' us hard at the moment, but this won't last too much longer, I would imagine.

That's just my opinion. I could be wrong.
