Europe doesn't technically need anything from the US and is about the same size, so they act as a devil's advocate. Which isn't a bad thing, it's debate.

The events seem to illustrate that we tend not to wontonly attack countries that have nukes, unlike Iraq. Unfortunately, all the pre-launch rhetoric makes us look like asses, not that we don't already, but you get the point.

The NK launch proves they have Weapons of Mass Destruction and willingness to use them.

Why is Bush not turning their asses to glass?

And the US gets its news from South Korea that 10 missiles were fired. Whatever happened to all of those missile launch detection systems?

Great way to waste some taxpayer dollars.

North Korea launched a long-range missile Wednesday that may be capable of reaching the United States but it failed after 35 or 40 seconds, two State Department officials said.

The missile was one of at least three that were fired. The two others were short-range missiles. All landed in the Sea of Japan.

"North Korea has gone ahead with the launch despite international protest," Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe said. "That is regrettable from the standpoint of Japan's security, the stability of international society, and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction."

Wow, there is DaveTheFearmongerer saying that NK launched a doomsday weapon that with hack the planet while stealing your watches *AND* blowing you up.

Good one dave "NK launches WMD". HAH!

last time I checked, nobody called a missile a WMD. It evidences a program to do that though. I know you like to put words in other people's mouths, so this isn't too shocking.

Evidence that we didn't know before and that you know for a fact that we didn't find out from NORAD systems?

Ohh wait, I am sure you don't have that. Yet more hyperbole from tools like you and dave.

I am sure, in your usual (and daves) cut and run fashion, that you are too chicken to respond to this, but I'll put it here anyway.

What NK is doing, more than anything else, is postyuring for attention in the eyes of the US Government.

Screaming and yelling at the top of their lungs, "See Us Now!' - whether or now we like it, we will soon have to
deal with them diplomatically and have a real time discussion with them in the theatre of international politics.
The Bush Administration just cannot ignore them much longer - even if everything that they threw into the sky was a dud.

Someone from Washington is going to have to bite their rhetoric, and sit down and have a discussion - like it or not.

If you want to stop NK, then join the military and request a stint at the great Korean Speed bump.

What I find most interesting about this story as a news junkie is the fact that MSNBC didn't bother to break away from their taped documentary to report on the missile launches when they happened. WTF? I can't think of a more legitimate news story to break away to than this. Makes you wonder if Abrams is trying to shift away from being a news network and towards the infotainment side.

There was a 7th Medium Range Missile fired today that there was no Mainstream News Alert about either.

7-5-2006 7th N. Korean missile intensifies furor

North Korea test-fired a seventh missile Wednesday, intensifying the furor that began when the reclusive regime defied international protests by launching a long-range missile and at least five shorter-range rockets earlier in the day.

Of course there's no hype about it--we're not going to do anything but use them as an example of evil. Now, if we were going to do something militarily, then there would be hype.

So in a nutshell, Russia and China (A) benefit economically from NK, (B) view NK as a deterrent to U.S. hegemony, or (C) both A & B FTW?

(D) View NK as a PITA to the US and enjoy watching the US react accordingly when NK pulls such stunts.

Russia and China are actually within range of their nukes. I don't think NK is a benefit economically, and it seems rather doubtful that they are rejecting the proposal on some childish whim.

So are they done littering, or do they have still more trash to dump in the Sea of Japan.

Infunkingcompetent.

Staged to prove that they can match our single successful Shuttle flight with 7 of their failures?
Setting up to shoot more blanks - and throw everything away as fast as they can reload?

Does anyone seriously think that they are gleening any test data from this display?
Christ, we already know more about what they have done by monitoring them from afar -then they themselves will be able to decipher.
They probably killed the gerbil on the treadmill as well.
It's like them there hicks shooting off their shotguns into the air - Boom !, ye-ha, Bubba done scared the trailer park.

Keep it up, throw away everything else you got, prove your weapons by runnng out of ammo . . . brilliant.
You done shakin' in your boots yet?

On the other hand, to counter the unsuccessful firing of approximately 7 malfunctioning missles in North Korea -
Towns on Cities throughout America fired hundereds and thousands, perhaps millions of rockets in the sky
on Tuesday night, almost all of them successfully, as a display of patriotism.

One question for you guys. How do they know the missle failed and they just didn't send it into the water after 40 seconds? I mean come on, 40 seconds of data is quite a lot.

On a flight that should be sustained in a boost phase for a minumum of 7 minutes?
Even a first stage primative rocket needs a full 60 seconds of boost run time to position the next stage
to take advantage of forward momentum for the second boost phase.
To reach 1/2 way around the world an any direction you have to obtain an altitude of 500 miles, minumum,
for it to reach it's destination point 30 minutes after launch.

Primative telemetry won't feed diddly-squat in reviewable data on any single launch, and they were throwing Scuds,
and other flying junk - in a 'Fire-for-effect' headline grab attempt.

The biggest threat from these flying clouds of debris, is chunks of crap falling on places under their alledged flight path . . +/- 100 miles.

I doubt China or Russia are terribly happy about the situation. If we did decide to intervene militarily, Kim Jong-Il would likely realize quickly that we would overrun him, and would look to create as much trouble as possible. Ie, firing every missile he had at every nearby target he could. Namely, Korea, Japan, Russia, and China.

South Korea and Japan, yes. China and Russia, no way. Their only hope would be an alliance similar to that which barely saved their ass in the '50s, and even if that wasn't possible, there's no way they'd voluntarily bring China into a war on the other side. North Korea will not be hitting China with a missile.

alliances are what starts world wars. China and Russia knows this well. I believe both of them are more concerned about their own country and focusing on their own economies. Sure they both have a bond with NK since the Korean war...but it's a different day and age now. Just because they all were/are communist societies does not mean they are buddies.

At the same time, China and Russia aren't going to side against the NK since both are a stones throw from NK.
