Rafael Nadal will not defend his Wimbledon title.

The top-seeded Spaniard announced Friday he is withdrawing because of tendinitis in his knees.

He is the first reigning Wimbledon men's champion to not defend the title since Goran Ivanisevic in 2002 ? and only the second in the last 35 years.

The grass-court Grand Slam tournament begins Monday.

Might as well handover the trophy to The Fed now and call it a day.

Oh shoot, I was hoping for a Federer/Nadal rematch of last year

Bahgdatis and Monfils are out with injury, too.

But yeah, what you already said, it's Fed's to lose now.

Damnit. Nadal/Fed rematch was going to be awesome. Last years was fantastic! Looks like Fed will have a strong chance of beating Sampras' record now. At Wimbledon!

I hope he can recover for the hardcourt season coming up, but its not likely if these knee injuries are causing him issues during the clay/grass season.

I'm glad he took the smart way out instead of thinking "I'm must defend my title" .... he needs to take care of his body, eps. since his game is peaking. It would be a shame if he played and got even more hurt and it goes downhill from there. We need more federer vs nadal matches

he's one of the players that has been whining about the increased drug testing on tour. i wonder if his body breaking down and his slumping of late has to do with it as well...

Yes I've heard the rumors, I don't know how valid they are though.

Yes I've heard the rumors, I don't know how valid they are though.

Check out the recent article in the NYTimes magazine on how his playstyle wrecks his body much faster than normal players.

nadal's game is very physical compared to the likes of a federer or roddick. it's no surprise his knees are starting to give out.

Not necessarily- look at Thomas Muster.
Guy had fucked up knees, had them repaired, and then dominated clay like nobody's business.
Nadal already dominates clay. Roger got a gift. When Rafa is repaired (and perhaps adapts to Muster's sliding style to lessen wear and tear) he'll win another 4 in a row.
