HOLY CRAP!!!
I forgot about Ultima Exodus on NES.
Had that game for a LOOOONG time before I broke down and payed for the official strategy guide from FCI. With that guide the game is almost too easy.
It explains so much that should have been in the instruction manual.

Dragon Warrior 3 and 4 were also too long. I lost patience towards the end.
DW 1 had no balance. I played for 3 years and never got to level 30. Luckily you can beat it at level 23.

Got the ROMS for NES Final Fantasy 2 and 3. Those are too dull after playing the Super NES FF 4,5,6.

If you like Dragon Warrior (esp. IV), then you really owe it to yourself to track down a copy of Torenko's Last Hope (Lost Hope?) for PSX. It's a maze-RPG, kind of like Dragon Crystal on Sega, or Chocobo's Dungeon on PSX, but starring the fat merchant guy from DW4. It's really cool, and quite a challenge later on. I'm still working on it myself. It's basically like Rogue/NetHack, but with an entire Dragon Warrior theme to it.

ooh, I think it'd be easier to mention which games I DID beat
I remember I had Looney Toons on my GameBoy Pocket, that dick of a game became IMPOSSIBLE once you finished the Speedy Gonzales level (I think where I got stuck is actually where you play as Bugs Bunny)

I got stuck in Ultima III: Exodus and then later in Ultima 7: the serpents Isle there was an area i couldnt get pass/defeat.. dunno if it was a bug or what.. i just cried with frustration, then quit playing it

I also think that games back in the day were super hard compared to nowadays. Now a game is created according to a storyline mostly and as soon as you finish it, its time for another sequel to that game... its a marketing ploy, a way to keep cranking out games and having the customer paying for a new game. Who wants to buy the sequel if the original was too "hard" to finish..

Long live the old glorydays of gaming.. even tho i didnt finish Ultima III: Exodus, it was quite a trip!

Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal Expansion

I remember around the fifth level the game just became impossible...hordes and hordes of orcs or humans would constitute an endless charge.

Pissed me off since Blizzard usually makes pretty easy to play games.

Never played the expansion

Finished ALL normal levels without losses. Took ages on some, and a lot of micromanagement, but I managed to in the end. Wish I had tried the expansion too

I could do that with the humans because they could heal but never as the orcs

Ghosts and goblins
Some zodiac game for the atari 2600 (Swordquest Earthworld is what it sounds like)
Goonies 2 for NES
Dracula for Sega CD (Made it 20-25 minutes into and always got bitten)
The Pit BBS game (No more registered games in operation

hmm you guys sure it was Goonies and not Goonies II?

edit: cause Goonies was only out in japan. Goonies II came out in the states.

This FAQ/Walkthrough is for the Famicom game Goonies. If you've ever wondered
why there was a game for the NES called Goonies II and not just Goonies, you're
not alone. I always thought the NES game was a sequel to the movie, hence the
"II" in the title. This was before learning of the vast amount of cool
Japanese NES (Famicom) games that never made it to the states. One of these
was a simple little game called The Goonies.

In 1986, early in the Famicom's young life, Konami decided to cash in on the
movie's success with a cute little platform game of the same name. I'm not
sure how popular it was in Japan, but it never made its way over to the states.
We did get the sequel, Goonies II, which is a great game in itself and got to
enjoy the adventures of Mikey and the gang, but it would have been nice to get
a taste of the original.

The original Goonies game is only available for the Famicom, but there are at
least 3 ways of playing the game. You can either (1) find the actual Famicom
cart. These are hard to find, but they pop up on eBay every now and then. (2)
The Goonies is found on quite a few Famicom Multi-Carts. In fact, the first
time I ever played the game was when I bought a 64-in-1 cart and found the game
among the 64 first generation Famicom games. (3) The last way to play the
game, and probably the most common nowadays, is to download the ROM somewhere.

LOL! I remember that. I think there was a trick to it but I can't recall.. using one of the items or something like that got you just barely over. I definitely remember falling like a million times though, and if I did get past then I know for sure I still haven't beaten it.

Now all I need to do is figure out how to get this game again.

I can finally go to sleep in peace.

Thanks Larry.

Dude, just get a Sega Master System (original Sega console) emulator and the rom, and you're instantly teleported to back in the day.
Did that first thing this morning. Already got 2 of the 3 companions.

Shweet.

The one game that I really had problems with and never did beat is "Need for Speed Underground". I usually can get into a game and beat it in no time.

For games that I owned:

Friday the 13th: Kill Jason once, couldn't touch him the 2nd time around.

Legacy of the Wizard: Got stuck and didn't have any kind of Guidebook for help.

MegaMan X: Couldn't beat the last guy. Getting to him was took a little while, but was easy. No save option.

Renegade: Got repetitive after awhile. Lost interest.

For the record, although Goonies (1) was never released on the NES, it was available to play in those pay-for-time Nintendo PlayChoice-10 arcade machines. It wasn't nearly as impressive a game as Goonies 2 was, but it was a bit more of a straightforward action-platformer, and rather fun in its own right. You can play it on an emulator, and some of those grey-market "50in1" carts also had it on there. Another fun one was Konami's Arctic Adventure, the penguin-race game. I don't know why that one never came out it in the States, it was so much fun. There was a NES version of Thexder, Karateka, and some other classics too, that were never released over here. Quite a shame, really.

Yeah, what they said, but add the PlayChoice-10 arcade machines to that list.

I have to add Legacy of the Wizard to my list of "never beaten" games too, thanks for the mention. I'm going to have to get working on that.

Word. I remember my brother and I trying to beat that damn thing. We spent hours trying to figure out how to get pass that stage where you are on the vehicle trying to jump and dodge the upcoming lane blocks. They get faster and faster until it's near impossible...
The scary thing is - and trust me on this one - that's one of the easy levels. Yeah.

Dear God! That was an easy level? Those things smoked me every time!

Oh, and Back to the Future for the NES. I never got past the 2nd Diner I think

Ninja Gaiden was actually pretty easy

Just hold down Y for teh super moves! (absorbing the balls) when you gain the ability.

Yeah one of the bosses was *really* hard, but if you roll and jump, everything is okay!

FFX? who said that was hard? i love that game.. only hard things are the ultimate weapon items (chocobo race anyone?) i managed to do it both times i beat the game though for clouds sword

Ninja gaiden was hard on xbox but so fun, i really enjoyed playing that game and beating it.

edit; beat zelda 2 and MTPO, never beat castlevania/old ninjagaiden, and the other ones people mentioned, NES had some hard ass games. did beat contra, lifeforce, gradius, W&W1..

ill tell you what though, ive taken my emulator and gone back to rebeat zelda, zelda2, W&W1, and used it to beat dragon warrior1 which i never beat.. maybe ill take a stab at TMNT1, that underwater level/electrocution was ridiculous...
