I never beat Zelda 2 without save state. I guess you have to map out the Great Palace and use trial and error 100 times?

I did beat the original Ninja Gaiden once in college. Played all day before finally beating it. What an absurd game.

I also beat MT's Punch Out after trying it again in college. Tyson isn't that difficult once you make it past the first 1:30 and learn his timing.

Ninja gaiden was hard on xbox but so fun, i really enjoyed playing that game and beating it.

edit; beat zelda 2 and MTPO, never beat castlevania/old ninjagaiden, and the other ones people mentioned, NES had some hard ass games. did beat contra, lifeforce, gradius, W&W1..

ill tell you what though, ive taken my emulator and gone back to rebeat zelda, zelda2, W&W1, and used it to beat dragon warrior1 which i never beat.. maybe ill take a stab at TMNT1, that underwater level/electrocution was ridiculous...

you mean FF7? FFX was the one with the whiny dude Tidus.

This thread has inspired me to go out and (re-)buy some old nes carts. Forget emulation, i need the tactile feel of a boxy controller.

I found TMNT1, it's just as hard as I remember. Played for about 30 min to make sure the cart worked, died at the water lvl (big suprise). I think I'm gonna have to practice at this one.

I remember Duck Tales being a b*tch, so i picked that up as well. You gotta love side scrolling platform games. I played this for 3-4hrs last night, almost beat it, mostly because somehow I still remember alot of the secrets. Long levels and no continues make this one a bit tough.

I already had Wizards And Warriors, so i busted that out. I had completely forgotten that you have infinite continues, and if that wasnt enough, you start from the exact spot you died losing no items in the process. I had no problem beating this in a few hrs. That doesn't mean it wasnt fun though. Some of the bosses require strategy, and most levels are full of places to explore.

I found Kung-Fu on my shopping trip! I remember only having beaten that one time. I played once to check the cart, and sure enough, it's still as hard as i remember. Another one i need to practice. I love the evil laugh @ game over, I had forgotten about that.

I still need to find a copy of Zelda2 (mine disappeared long ago), and I really want Kid Icarus. I never managed to beat those. Somewhere though, I need to find a stopping point on this NES madness, my wife thinks i've lost my mind.

No, there's no end.

I hated that I could not beat that game...Also, I will agree, Punch out was a tough one. I never beat Betroid either though. I guess I didn't have the patience. Right now I struggle with Splinter Cell Pandora tomorrow.

After reading through this entire post, I am only somewhat surprised to find that noone hear has mentioned a game for the NES called " Little Ninja Brothers". Oh my gosh that game was addictive, but never did beat it. If anyone did, please comment cuz gosh I really want to know what happened!

Oh, cool, I looked that one up here, that was like the RPG version of the game I mentioned, "Kung-Fu Heros", and apparently they did Magic of Scheherazade too.

Anyone played Kabuki Quantum Fighter on NES? Rolling Thunder? I beat both of those, R.T. was pretty tough, especially the second time through. KQF had some tricky jumps, but not too bad. Milon's Secret Castle, and Hudson's Adventure Island were another couple pretty tough ones. I never beat Snake Rattle N Roll either, the higher levels (ice!) get really tricky. Worse than Marble Madness for NES, that's for sure, similar sort of isometric perspective, both were programmed by RARE.

even with emulation/game genie i still can't beat it. :/
Word. I remember my brother and I trying to beat that damn thing. We spent hours trying to figure out how to get pass that stage where you are on the vehicle trying to jump and dodge the upcoming lane blocks. They get faster and faster until it's near impossible...
The scary thing is - and trust me on this one - that's one of the easy levels. Yeah.

yah, i can make it easy to the 5th-6th level or so

but i literally just used game genie to get to end level with like one hit and kill enemy codes and i still couldn't beat it hah : /, i really want to play again...i just wish i had a controller b/c i can't play the games well with keyboard and never found a nice pad that reminded me of snes/nes controller.

oh well.

and yah, super ghouls and ghost i sucked at.

i didn't beat a lot of games though b/c i just stopped playing/didn't care.

battletoads was probably the only game i really really tried to beat and couldn't.

has anybody ever beaten it? I'm curious as to the ending

there's gotta be very few people who could beat that game without cheats.

Most impossible frickin game I ever played: Target Earth for the Sega Genesis. I couldn't even get past the first lvl. I didn't read this entire thread so I'm not sure if anyone else listed this one. If you remember this game though, you probably know what I'm talking about.
EDIT: OK...I just read the entire thread. Does anyone even remember this game? If you used the invincibility cheat (hold start button on controller 2 when starting the game) the game was awesome, but without it there was NO way in hell you could beat it.

not too bad once you got the pattern (the wink) down.. it was a challenge to TKO him in the first round... only did that once.

my problem is since the kids were born, i dont have the mental stamina or time to finish anything other then sports game seasons (no plot to rememeber, and each game is unique and finishable upon itself).

So many games I could list off, could be near endless. I'll throw one out, I tried ever so hard, but could never beat Diablo II (was it hell mode that it was called playing second time through?) in single player with the Palidin. I had to keep all the defenses built up, then for me it was nothing but swing & miss, swing & miss, swing & miss, think I only connected once in 10 times with the sword.

Then I'd have to list Back to the Future 2 on the C64, would die during the first level like 19 out of 20 attempts, and never got past the second level.

Punchout was hard. I remember when my friend called me and said he beat king hippo! lol, we maybe I'll have to fire it up again one day.

CONTRA is hard! At least when I was a kid. I had to use the 20 lives cheat. I played it on my computer and with keyboard i can usually get through the whole game using one continue.

Mortal Kombat 3 for genesis. It's pretty easy normally, but I tried using the smoke cheat (to unlock the hidden character)... OH MY LORD it becomes Impossible.

That's mostely just tons of trial and error as most of the randomly generated minefields can't be solved without guessing in at least a few places.

Oh cmon if you gotta guess at that game then you need to learn how to DEDUCE. My record time is 112 seconds, while my friend managed to get 94 seconds.

Another impossible game, if anybody else has ever played it, was Chip's Challenge.
