Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal Expansion

I remember around the fifth level the game just became impossible...hordes and hordes of orcs or humans would constitute an endless charge.

Pissed me off since Blizzard usually makes pretty easy to play games.

Never played the expansion

Finished ALL normal levels without losses. Took ages on some, and a lot of micromanagement, but I managed to in the end. Wish I had tried the expansion too

You mean Phantasy Star? One of the greatest console RPGs, ever.
It spawned a number of sequels, ranging from mediocre to excellent. (PS4 for Genesis is very true to the spirit of the original.)

I still sit up nights wondering what the hell I could possibly do to finish that game. It's a real simple RPG and at the end I just wandered around trying to find the final badguy or whatever dungeon he's in.
You'll be wandering for a while... you're talking about the last dungeon, in the Sky Castle, right? Guess what - the door to the final boss, isn't visible, it's along the side of a hallway, and the way the 3D engine is written, there are no graphics for doors on the sides. You'll have to map carefully, and check every square. Or cheat like a mofo like I did, and call up a Sega game counsellor, and get them to mail you a map. (Ok, for the record, I did map out the entire rest of the game myself.)

The only clue I had was some stupid scroll that said something like, "...you must go south seven days, west two days and north three days..."
I tried every damn square on that map, in every concievable order, and nothing.
PLEASE for the love of all that's good, I must know!!!
Hmm, don't remember that, unless you are talking about the directions to find something in the desert, I think that's in the middle of the game.

Btw, if you like that game, there is one for the TG-16 that is very similar. A bit more action-oriented, and less RPG-ish (no real storyline to speak of), but two-player at the same time, called Double Dungeons. In fact, it motivated me to write a clone of it in text-mode graphics on my HS's VAX years ago. I never got around to putting in the monsters though.

I was just thinking, and I never finished the Dark Wizard game on SegaCD either. Interestingly, it seems like that game was a nearly direct clone of the Lodoss War anime series.

Nah I'm sure it's called Fantasy Warriors, and it was for the original Sega. I also loved the Phantasy Star series (played a couple of them as well as a couple of Final Fantasy's).

Thanks Larry, but it looks like another long night for me.

Just about every game i've ever played...I get too bored before I finish usually...or most games I play don't have an end, they just involve me shooting people online

Oh my god, I'm an idiot! Yes it was called Miracle warriors, and yes that is exactly what I was looking for!!!

Now all I need to do is figure out how to get this game again.

I can finally go to sleep in peace.

Thanks Larry.

Dude, just get a Sega Master System (original Sega console) emulator and the rom, and you're instantly teleported to back in the day.

Shadow of the Beast on the Amiga. You had to make it through the entire game without dying since there were no saved games. I made it up to the end monster three times, never made it. Just gave up because it took over an hour each time to make it all the way through the game.

Spy Hunter, no end. Pitfall, the only end is that time runs out. I got to the end of it and on the back of the cover it said to take a picture of the screen when you reach the end and send it into them for some contest or something. Never took a picture though.

also it should be easier now to beat games because...

of the the Internet (gamefaq.com).

Back then when you were stuck with the game, you couldn't go online and look at a gamefaq, you either had to wait for someone to ask the question on Nintendo Power/Gamepro/EGM and have it answered. Or call their 1-900 game hotline or something and pay up alot for the hint/tip to beat the game.

So you're the guy that did that. I got a pile of old NES stuff that a fellow that I knew that owned his own used game shop gave me when he cleared out the back room. A bunch of the NES controllers had some pretty disturbing-looking bite marks on them.
Thankfully, I have plenty more non-bitten ones to spare.
