Name from email?

Personal attacks and threats are being made to me and my kids via email. I have an idea of who it is but want to be sure before I take any action. How can I go about finding out who is the owner of the email address? Any help would be greatly appreciated...if they weren't local I'd just delete the emails, but this person is sending me snail mail threats as well.

How would they be able to find the person if there is no return address and everything is typed?

You can try and trace the IP address in the email header (usually hidden by default) to see if you can track down the person.

Unfortunately, email addresses are easily spoofed, so the FROM address alone tells you nothing.

If they can look at the headers on the emails, they may be able to track them back to the person sending them. They can then do DNA on the envelope seal, to see if they can tie them together, and they can check for fingerprints.

If this person is willing to pay to threaten you (stamps), you'd better take this very seriously. Let the professionals handle it.

It is illegal to send threats through snail mail. Call the police. As for email...I believe looking at the email header could give some clue as to where (IP Address) the mail came from. Then you can find whicch ISP that address belongs to and the isp can say who had the isp.

I personally would go to the police first...

The person who sent the snail mail might have left fingerprints on it. If you have a idea of who the person is, turn it over to law enforcement along with that persons name.

since you have no idea what an IP address even is, it does YOU no good. Contact law enforcement. period.
