they are a 3-piece, yes, and i think they've even changed both drummers and guitarists, but i know for a fact that les claypool is the only bassist they've ever had.

and i have to laugh at the "sampled" bass thing. um, no. les claypool is widely regarded to be one of the best bassists rock music has ever seen. he runs circles around flea, for instance.
