Name of space ship simulator game?

Hoping you can remember what the name of the following game might be. It was released late 90s' or early 2000's.

You were the commander of a ship mostly in the command module, you could hook up to other ships and then control them. The interesting thing about it was that you could control 3-4 parts of the ship (engineering, weapons, navigation, something else) in great detail or sit back in the command chair and have a general overview with less refined control. I believe it was multiple disks since I remember the case being double thick.

If anyone remembers what the name of this game was please let me know.

Sounds kind of like the failed Battlecruiser 3000AD. Game was so bad it was released for free 10 years ago.

I don't remember this being unstable, it played happily on a Windows 98 box. I also remember everything being pretty well documented in the manuals unlike some of the horror stories I read about 3000 ad. I also remember a central character think it was a black captain that you played.

IW2 was probably the last decent space sim to come out.

Yep, IW2 was one of the finest space sims EVER, especially with a few common-sense type mods.

Incidentally, IW1 had a MASSIVELY LONG FIFTEEN MINUTE intro. Aweeeeeesome.

Picked up X3 series on steam & both IW games on gog, someone mentioned mods for them. Have any sites or recommended mods? Notes on getting it to work on Windows 7 would be appreciated.

They are somewhat similar, but with IW2 having more entertaining and generally more tactile combat, and X3 with more entertaining and in depth economy and management.

Really love the IW2 soundtrack as well, quite unique, and sets the mood perfectly.

:Edit: IW2's graphics still hold up alright to be honest, so if some of you are on the fence because of it's age, check it out first.

Woah, IW2 actually looks pretty awesome. I wish I had more time for gaming these days, I'd pick that one up for sure.

I played IW2 recently but gave up a third of the way into the campaign. I really "wanted" to like this game as it has numerous original ideas and is unique even among space sims, but I found that the difficulty and lack of save games ultimately made it a chore to play. Some missions are absurdly hard and you also often die due to random events and bugs, which can mean replaying the last 20 minutes (most of which consists of just moving between places) to get back to that point.

I would still say it's worth trying out though, as there were a lot of things in it that impressed me. It's like a much more hardcore version of Freelancer. The graphics still look decent.
