Name one famous art painter of the last 50 years. You can't off the top of your head.

I guess that's just the way it is these days or in this era. But we can name actors and musicians on the spot.

A coworker explained it to me about 30 years ago when we were talking about art paintings like acrylics or oils on canvas or other surfaces. He said "When people hear a song on the radio or somewhere they say 'That's a catchy tune, I think I'll buy it.' But with paintings or copies of them like lithographs and posters people are like eh, meh."

There are exceptions. A few have made a killing on their paintings and posters of them like that Thomas Kinkade guy who died in 2012. He was the "painter of light" with his landscape paintings showing fancy lighting effects like the brightly lit windows in cottages and the brilliantly lighted skies. But who remembers or heard of the name Kinkade?

And what would an art thread be without pics, Kinkade in this case, it's not a site selling his stuff it's just a Google search page.

G Zimmerman is probably the most popular art painter around because of notoriety over his trial then popping out some abstracts or realistic paintings or whatever they were. And I guess some of you could name Andy Warhol who died in '87.

Julian Lethbridge. Though he's not that famous. Fell in love with one of his paintings in New York and when I have enough extra cash and a proper place to display it, I plan on buying one. He's an older dude, but he is still painting.

I do have a list of other current artists that I like, but I would not have been able to name them off the top off my head and a lot of them are dead now so can't really call them current. Also would probably not call them famous.

So yeah, I get your point.

Kinkade's work is shit. He's a good example of mass-produced garbage that caters to the lowest common denominator.

Was gonna say the same. The only painter I ever cared for, dude was awesome.

We care less about paintings because back in the day we didn't have movies/tv shows/video games/comic books to also use our recreational time on.

Well seeing as we now have these moving picture thingies, art really isn't a very relevant form of expression anymore. Music is more popular now because of social media and computer technology and still pictures like photographs and paintings just aren't that popular anymore.

But I've seen the work of Pricasso. Impressive.

Thomas Kinkade. His crap is on wallpaper all over the place. And Bob Ross. I think Kinkade (or is it Kincaid? Kinkaid?) is a bit over-rated.

I was able to name two, from the OP's thread title.

True, and probably the most famous of them all. Certainly the most financially successful in his lifetime, by a few orders of magnitude.

Warhol was the first name that popped into my head, but Picasso, Dali, Rockwell, and others were still alive 50 years ago.
