Is this the centennial update to the old "the ignorant masses seem incapable of identifying a single futurist painter, yet have no complaint recalling scores of the practitioners of vaudevillian japery" argument? Who gives a shit? You can't name any barbershop quartets or sonnet writers or sculptors or whatever art style was popular at some point in the past; how offensive your ignorance must seem to the small handful of people gazing wistfully into times long gone as the world leaves them behind. Tastes change, and anyone who tells you that things were so much better when the most entertaining thing you could hope to do was look at dried paint on canvas would probably have a slightly less rose-tinted view of things if you gave them cholera and a leech to treat it with. Nostalgia for nostalgia's sake is ridiculous.
And the OP's premise is flawed anyway, since virtually everyone who responded named at least one painter from the last 50 years.
