So anyway... name some for me

While We Cry is a better Kenny Wayne Shepherd song.

Can the OP keep a list of artists in the first post? I'd like to look over a compiled list later on.

Sure, I'll do that right now.

I've been learning how to play Little Wing, and while searching YouTube for some clips of the song, I found a few of him playing it. Good Stuff

Oh, and add Rory Gallagher to the list.

Saw Robert Clay with Clapton this past October.... needless to say, fvcking amazing concert.

His 'Time Makes Two' song from that concert DVD is one of the most emotion drawing performances I've ever seen.. just his face, how he feels the music. Tell Satriani and the other fingerboard wizards to pay attention.. you can say a lot more with fewer notes than a string of 60 that have no feeling whatsoever in them.

Gilmour is also a master of 'saying a lot with very little' as is Steve Miller.

I'll have to check that out. I saw Robert Cray on some TV program last year and was floored. I really love his style and his voice is nice too.

Or, how about one of the best rhythm guitarists, Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth? He may not be able to shred but his playing is tight and precise.

Perhaps not surprising that the selection here is very heavily weighted towards hairbands and blues rock, but IMO, the best guitarists are almost always jazz or classical. I've seen jazz guitarists pull off shredding hard rock stuff, but rarely does it go the other way.

Still, I'm somewhat surprised nobody came up with John McLaughlin yet. Not only is he one of the most gifted technical guitarist of our time, he also changed music. Something few others on the list have.

I believe that Steve Hackett was the first to do triplets (the thing that made EVH so famous.)

Michael Hedges. One of the best acoustic guitarists ever. Some consider him the "Hendrix" of acoustic guitar because of how innovative he was.
