definitly agree with eits that Mark Wahlberg is underrated.. I mean, sure he was in a few flicks awhile ago. either he gave up acting, or he just hasn't been in a movie in awhile. He played his parts perfectly.
another one? Jared Leto. Awesome singer for one, and two.. well, he doesn't seem to be an incredibly sought after actor. He was in Requiem for a Dream (awesome performance in it), Panic Room (played his role as best he could given the script), and Lord of War (excellent performance in it as well, yet another drug-addict lol)
basically, if there needs to be a drug-addict role, give it to Jared Leto.

Sounds like you've only seen one hopkins movie, and you think he hasn't been in anything else. You also must not know he's been nominated for at least 4 academy awards that I can think of, and he's won at least once.

I've seen many Hopkins movies. Including all the Silence of the Lambs series (Hannibal, Red Dragon).

I'd say that Ed Norton is underrated by the public. Ask Joe Q Public what movies Edward Norton has been in. You MIGHT get Fight Club and American History X. Beyond that not many know his other movies, even though he's great in a lot of em.

There seems to be a lot of shenanigans and tomfoolery going on in this thread. There are two categories of underrated actors. Those that are underrated by the general public, and those that are underrated by the Academy/SAG/Golden Globes/etc.

For the sake of argument, we need to set some guidelines. I recommend we focus on those actors underrated by the various critical groups, not the general public. The reason for this is that we can at least have some measure of being able to guage the talent of an actor by looking at their nominations. That said, if an actor/actress has been nominated for ANYTHING, that means they are recognized for their talent. This doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't underrated if they have been nominated.

Tweak and discuss these rules as you must.

I was talking with a record rep. from Virgin and he was saying that Jared turned down roles in like, 3 major movies (I forget which ones) because of his commitment to his band. He won't sign things from his acting career at their shows. He's pretty cool to talk to... seems to remember people he's met.

what does that have to do with them being underrated? they've been award nominees and winners more than a couple times. EVERYONE knows who they are. you've got to be a fvcking idiot or live under a rock to think they're underrated.

might as well say robert redford is underrated because he hasn't been in anything recently... or how about anthony hopkins... oh, i know... sidney poitier. he's GOT to be underrated because he hasn't been in anything for a while.

It seems like all actors I always felt were underrated are now getting recognition.

Hugo Weaving (I was afraid that after Matrix he'd be forgotten. But then he did LotR and he now is V in V for Vendetta)

Clive Owen (Most people I know still don't know who he is, but he's been getting some good parts and has been amazing in all of them. Most of you would know him as Dwight in Sin City.)

Christian Bale (Watch Equilibrium, one of the best movies I've ever seen and he is amazing in it. Once he got Batman I was happy that he finally got the recognition he deserved)

Up until the last few years I would've said that Johnny Depp and Sean Penn were both quite underrated.

Ziyi Zhang (Give you an idea of how good of an actor she is, she's not actually a martial artist, most of her martial arts work in movies is adapted dance moves)

This is really a hard thread to respond to when most of my favorite actors are finally getting recognized.
