PC gaming specifically? Hmm... I'd have to say either Diablo 1, Populous: The Beginning, or Worms Armageddon. Probably Worms, but I played them all a TON.
I don't think anything really got me into PC gaming... I mean, I used to play Number Munchers and Word Munchers on a 286, but I still played console games too. The first pure entertainment game I played on the PC was probably Wolfenstein 3D and then other games like Rise of the Triad. I think the first PC game I got into a good amount was StarCraft... my friend brought his copy over and I was playing all night long .
Hmm..first game that drew me into gaming was pacman on atari 2600...hard to really separate it from there, I suppose by PC standards it would have been DOOM even though I was hooked on playing computer games long before then(Star Raiders on Atari 800 for example..I played the hell out of that game).
Wolfenstein 3D (1992)
F-117A Night Hawk Fighter 2.0 (1993)
X Wing (1993)
Tank: The M1A1 Abrams Battle Tank Simulation (1989)
So around 1993 era games. I remember seeing Wolfenstein 3D and being amazed at the concept of 2 axis 3D movement. I had a 486 @33mhz 8mb of ram (later expanded to 16mb) and a 2mb (expandable memory of course) Tseng Labs ET4000W32 video card in the ISA slot. Mode X 256color VGA at 640x480 blew my mind.
I don't quite remember... my brother is 7 years older than I am and he was always playing games, so I kind of grew up with them.. but I think the game that I played most when I was young was Starcraft.
That said I do have some distinct memories of playing a Warcraft demo.
My father played Doom, Diablo, Duke Nukem 3D when I was a little too young to fully appreciate them. A few years later I played UT99 at a friends house and I was hooked ever since.
Time Bandits, on the Atari ST. Sundog was actually the first game we got on it, but I never got completely hooked to Sundog like I did with Time Bandits. Wasted many an evening on that game, and never even came close to finishing it... it was incredibly difficult compared to modern games.
Scorched Earth. Followed By EverQuest once I dusted it off from my closest 2 years after being gifted it since that's how long it took for me to have a computer capable of running it.
Computer game was Warcraft 2 via bbs multiplayer. I played duke 3d before that, but got my ass kicked multiplayer, same bbs, but was much better at WC2. WC2 got me hooked, then of course SC.
Never liked doom that much, quakes were much better. SC2 sucks pretty bad lol, blizzard sucks ballz since the original wow.
It's the PC game that propelled me in PC gaming per se, but it's not the first PC game I've played, such was the main subject of this thread wasn't it. The first PC game I've played in my life as far as my memory allows me to reach must have been Wolfenstein 3D, in some electronics store perhaps with the game on a demonstration stand for the PC itself and not the very game. The very first PC game I've owned was the original DOOM demo/shareware that came in a magazine's package that my cousin bought, and I still remember that day well.
But with that said, Diablo II is the one game that "forced" me to upgrade my pre-built crappy PC at that time, I could only upgrade the memory and that's it. Then a few months later after reading the basics of PCs and building your own before buying one I decided to buy one since it just so happened that I had found my first real full-time job just a few months prior to that purchase, and of course buying my first "real" home computer created a chain of events and of new interests in PC gaming which allowed me to plunged wallet-first into PC gaming in general.
