If you're like me, you still have some free domain names registered through NameZero's free service. According to an FW thread, Namezero's ending its free service on Feb. 28. So if you keep the current domain name, you've got to pay the discounted Plus service fee of $19.95 for one year, which gives you control and ownership over the domain name.

So, is this a sucker play by NameZero?
They'll end up owning the names people proposed unless they pay up to NameZero at $19.95?

When GoDaddy and others are under $10/yr?

This is valuable information, I am glad that tsee posted it because there are many namezero users out there who want to know, myself among them. People should fill us in when a good hot deal falls through, like namezero, so they can be ready. People wanted to know when Flooz went bankrupt, and cyberrebate, and many other companies as well. I encourage people to show a little bit more respect. I for one thank you for posting this tsee.

My free one year Namezero domain registration expired about a year ago. After it expired, they emailed offering to renew it at $19.95. A few months later, it was $14.95. Then $9.95. Now they're offering to renew it for $4.95!

Thanks BrintonAA and everyone else who like the exchange of info we have here at AT forums.

Vinster, I can't believe you're getting such a hot deal! I signed up a domain for $9.95, which is good but now they're asking $39.95 if I want to renew again!

I signed up for mine more than 2 years ago when they first started service. A few months later, they "did me a favor" and bought the .net and .org extensions for my domain as well. I never used the domain and I *thought* they took over. Since then, I've gotten at least one "last chance" to regain my domain at a special price from them.

heh.. same here! Those NameZero ppl are liars. They kept spamming me with emails...

1) Your domain will expire on XXX. Please send $19 to renew.....
2) Your domain will expire next week! Take advantage of the discount $4!

Then u check a week later and your domain is still up! They kept telling me my domain is/will expired like a year ago and it's still works.

Although the domain doesn't forward to a page i want.. i take advantage of the email forwarding option. Unlimited email and can forwarded or pop3.

Kinki, aren't you afraid someone may take the domain and then get all the emails?

I don't agree they're total fraud though. Their service's pretty good, and updates are effective right away. That's really convenient. Also, even if you got just a year's service, you still come out ahead (on avg. 10 bucks a year, for two).

They really ticked me off when they kept telling me they were ending email forwarding, then they weren't, then they were... It was like getting email from a schizophrenic. "We like you, please continue to use our free service." "We hate you, we hate you. Now pay up or go away." "No, we really, really like you. Come back, come back."

I went to a real domain registrar who provides good service for a fair price. And they haven't tried to do a Norman Bates on me either. (I went to enom if anyone is interested. Not a hot deal, but a fair deal.)

Kiki and everyone with the same 4.95 offer.

If you still have the time to renew for the 4.95 I would do so. And then transfer out of there. I let my chances linger and now I cannot access my domain any longer. I emailed them and they replied with the 39.95 offer.

Will wait for it to expire and hope to get the name again, though I also am concerned that NetworkSolutions will 'steal' the name and add it to their own cybersquat collection of names.

(fyi: NS tried to implement a law that allowed all expired domains go to them and that they could then 'cybersquat' them while they try to sell them at a premium)
Their attempt was at least temporarily thwarted.

BTW the NameZ sucks. They will steal names. Example: I registered a name for free like XYZSucks.com and after a couple months they must have received an inquiry from XYZ. Because all of a sudden I was simply told that the name violated their policy and that they would be transferring ownership. (And just for clarification: I didnt have anything derogatory, offensive or even referring to the 'XYZ' website.....though in time I would have.

No offer to challenge. Nothing. Simply, say goodbye to your domain.

Anyone ever transfer their domains off Namezero? What's the best way to do so? I bought my domain at $5 but could not find anything on their webpage as to transfering it out. Thanks in advance.

Dang... I had like 15 domains from them pointing to my website... Had script on my page too, that would break out of the frames so as I didn't have that stupid Namezero banner on the bottom of my webpage.....

Oh well, it was nice while it lasted... now let's just hope cjb.net doesn't go out of business or instead of my nice cjb.net pointer, then people will have to remember the L-O-N-G fortunecity address.

Anyone know how to stop making those pop-up windows appear from my page (without using program installed on the computer).

I bought my domain from them when they offered it for $9.95. I transferred it to godaddy 60 days later (which is how long network solutions - the real registrar for namezero domains - makes you wait). When it got to godaddy, I found a little bonus - it was good until 2005. So, apparently when namezero registered the domain for me, they paid for 3 years instead of just the 1 I purchased. When I transferred it to godaddy, they extended it another year. In total, I'll get use of my domain for 6+ years, including the free time from namezero, for only $19. Thanks, namezero!

Panicware.com's Pop-Up Stopper is absolutely, hands-down, the best thing ever since popups.

how long will it take for them to release a domain name? i would have swore that when my free service ended, they said/or i read that they would release my domain name in like 6 months....

so if i do the $19.95 and own it. what happens after a year?

next time i get one of those "renew" specials, ill take a closer look at it.

I don't see a problem.
Name zero includes more than simply a parking spot for your domain.
The $19.95 includes all the URL redirection stuff, unlimited email accounts with forwarding, and no banner.
Even GoDaddy costs more than this when you include these features.
($8.95 to park, + $9.95 to redirect URL, total $18.90, not including any email services.)

The email feature with forwarding is what works best for me.
I can set up an email for each website, such as anandtech@myname.com.
It will get autoforwarded to my real email, or I can assign a specific real email to send it too.
If I don't want it anymore, I kill that email.

Sure there are some things I dislike, but for the casual user, it's priced right and works well.
Also, they start sending out reduced prices about 6 months prior to your expiration.
I waited too long the first year, and had to pay $19.95.
The second year I renewed when they offered renewal at $14.95.
Was going to let another account drop, until they offered it for $4.95.
It is worth $19.95 when you compare it to others.

I registered a name for my student group, and I can set up emails like officers@suchsuch.org, and get emails forwarded to everyoen concerned. It's very useful.

You may want to take a look at mydomain.com, which is a subsidiary of namezero. supposedly they offer email forwarding/etc for free.

I wish I'd thought of that a long time ago. It would be very interesting to see who's selling my address to whom. Thanks for the idea.
