It's pretty easy to get things done when you have a super or close to a super majority. It doesn't mean she was good at her job. It means she had a stacked deck to play with.

Can you name a single initiative she attempted to pass and was not successful in? There might be a couple, but I can't think of any. She had a more ambitious agenda than any Speaker in my memory, (yes, far more than 1994) and she accomplished every major part of it.

Call it whatever you want, it doesn't really matter.

Yes...the $101,000 included both food and liquor...so now I'm supposed to feel better? Craig234...this is about abuse of privilege at the time of a major recession. I know that this may be hard for you to imagine...but this kind of shit doesn't sit well with some folks.

When voters went to the polls in 1994, only 30% had heard of the 'Contract with America'; fewer than that agreed with it, fewer than that had it change their votes.

And many of its provisions were quickly abandoned, forgotten, after at most a token 'well we voted on it that keeps our promise' symbolic vote.

And much of it was bad for America if it had passed.

What it really was was a gimmick, for the Republicans who did not have the Presidency to try to control the political agenda and take that from the President.

Instead of the President putting the issues up for consideration, the Congress's hearings, votes, news would be about the Republican leadership's agenda.

This last election was even worse, at having a new 'contract' written up - that was such a transparent gimmick that it actually had marks on the document showing it had been sent to Republicans from a corporate lobbyist's computer. It was vapid and vague - a transparent try to say 'maybe the gimmick can get some votes again'.

If Republicans wanted to stand for fiscal conservatism, they could join with Democrats and support Paygo - an actual anti-deficit law, instead of PR gimmicks tossed aside.

Since Republicans got the House, what really have we heard about the new 'contract'?

Instead, I've seen things like the energy committee being fought over between the guy who has the most energy company money donated to him of any member of the House and who *apologized to BP* for Obama's pushing them to put aside money for the affected Americans, and the guy who read from the bible in a hearing, saying global climate change is not a risk since the bible says God promised not to flood the world again (a topic probably deserving its own thread).

These 'contracts' are low quality gimmicks to try to get more control of the political agenda - for their real, unstated agenda for the rich.

So, not a word of apology or even acknowledgement you wrongly posted about her 'friends and family' running around the country without her, as well.

A problem with the 'folks' you mention is that they're irrational boobs who parrot what they're fed screaming about a few thousand dollars in the Speaker of the House's group trip expenses, but they are oblivious to hundreds of billions of corrupt spending by the people they vote for on the other side. That's a bad joke.

These same 'folks' won't ask a singe question about how many new military planes are bought with taxpayer dollars at hundreds of millions each, only over a few thousand.

They aren't citizens, they're children being led around by the nose by the corrupt leaders who feed them want they want to keep them ignoring real issues.

All those corporate corruption things - ignore them, and parrot Fox.

Indeed - but they are evil for-profit executives, whereas all her millions are earned by government contacts and contracts.

Well - they were evil for-profit executives back then. Now they are just more quasi-government GSE helmsmen, so I suppose it would be okay for them to fly by private jet now.

They only found documents covering one year and evidence that she was on ALL flights is not conclusive. Her family and friends flew frequently, evidently ate there fill, and got liquored up...all at the taxpayer expense. How nice. Most ethical Congress ever my ass.
