Nancy Reagan has died.

Former first lady Nancy Reagan has died in California at the age of 94.

Mrs Reagan had been living in Bel Air, Los Angeles, and had been in failing health in recent years.

Her 52-year marriage to Ronald Reagan was once described as the greatest love affair in the history of the American presidency.

When she became first lady in 1981, Mrs Reagan was criticised for an expensive renovation of the White House, but later became a much-loved figure.

i have a story about nancy reagan...

on my 4th birthday (in 1985) i was hit by a car and severely injured and air lifted to children's hospital in DC. while i was there in recovery, nancy reagan came to visit my floor around xmas time. all of the kids were wheeled out to see her in a larger room.

me being stubborn, even at my young age of 4, refused to be wheeled out there.

after she heard there was a stubborn kid who wouldn't come out to see her, she came to my hospital room to see me. i don't remember this at all but my mom still has the cut out from the washington post where they wrote a small article about me not going to see her so she had to come visit me in my room lol.

Wasn't she virtually the acting president for some time after Reagan was shot? I think I saw something about this on a documentary. Apparently after the shooting no one wanted to admit how bad Ronnie's condition was so essentially started making decisions for him as if he were still compos mentis - when in fact he was in a coma.

edit: oh, and there's the Alzheimer's thing too. There was a lot of speculation that Reagan was already pretty far gone while he was still in office. I think she played a much bigger role than anyone will probably ever realize.

I keep thinking of a particular eulogy from Ronald Reagan's funeral. I have the "Mourning in America" CD and this comes up on shuffle sometimes:

It always makes me smile.

I don't know what the copyrights are for funeral eulogies, but I don't think the Reagans would mind this being shared

The vice President is the second in line third being the Speaker Of The House. The first lady does not have any official capacity to run the country. Perhaps make suggestions to the President. That's it.
