I guess a lot of people that use napster really do end up buying more CD's.

This whole Napster thing is gonna get pretty interesting now that Davis Boies has taken on the case. A few weeks ago I thought it was a forgone conclusion that napster would lose the case. Now it's not that certain anymore, especially now that Napster has this report as ammo -- it can show that it didn't harm the RIAA members with it's activity, and in fact may be beneficial to them.

Very interesting.....

Boies has also raised the stakes considerably for the RIAA by adding the whole antitrust spectre. He's an expert in that field, and the RIAA should know that antitrust law DOES have significant teeth (ask microsoft).

I don't know if Napster's new legal arguments will fly with the federal court, but they have raised some VERY interesting points/arguments.

P.S. Napster has a very limited library. Sure , if you want Pink Floyd, Metallica or any of the current music it's there, but try finding something more eclectic and your search will almost always end up in vain.

Hey Red Dawn, you should try http://www.audiogalaxy.com. My cousin turned me onto it and it hasn't let me down on a search yet. I've never even used Napster because this site has had every song I've looked for from the 60's to the 90's.

Has anyone else heard about how Electra (I think) is going to start selling mp3's of their artists online? This seems all well and good, but they want to charge 2 TO 3 DOLLARS FOR A SINGLE, AND 15 DOLLARS FOR AN ALBUM!! now THAT is a mofo'ing joke! why in the world would i spend the money to download it and burn it onto a cd, when i could buy the real thing for the same price?? Idiots.

I have bought more CDs in the past three years than in the ten years before that. Most of the stuff I download online I end up buying anyway. I feel more comfortable buying a CD knowing that I am going to like at least 10/12 songs on it rather than buying a CD that may be 90% fluff.

If anything the digital music revolution is helping the recording industry. As far as I can see it, the only ones in danger are the one hit wonders.

TRUE! I once decided to download all the Radiohead songs I could find on Napster, and the day after I went out and bought two of their albums. I also bought "OK Computer" (their latest, very good) because I knew so many of the songs were good. Same goes with 2pac's "All Eyez On Me" and more.....

Triumph........sorry if this sounds a bit snobbish, but I'm not THAT broke that I can't afford to pay $15. I do, howeverm think it's ridiculous to charge $8 for singles, which they do in my country.

Well I'm glad you guys are doing this; for me personally since I started downloading MP3s back in '97 I've bought only about 2 CDs, this to complement the 80 I had bought prior to '97. Yes its wrong; but its so damn easy.

Along the same lines as Red's post:

I have come to think of CDs as software. You buy software on a CD, install it, then run it. With audio CDs, you buy the CD, encode it, and put the CD away.

I don't own a stereo system and my portable CD player is collecting dust now that I have a Nomad II. So I can keep my CDs in mint condition if I encode them once then shelve them.

The recording industry just doesn't get it. The old price of $15-$20 for a CD made sense because there was no competition. Now that there is competition, and since we are in a capitalistic society, they must drop their prices to compete. Obviously they are greedy and arrogant, and it'll take a lot for prices to drop. I was in complete shock when I walked into Sam Goody and saw a CD for $20. I could get that same CD for a little bit of my time and the cost of a blank CD-R. Jeez, get with it already! :|

Technically when you download a MP3 you are not getting the same product as when you buy a CD. I don't trust 90% of the people out there to know how to properly encode a CD. I'd rather buy the CD and do it myself.

Then again, $20 for a CD is out of the question. The most I will pay is $12. I get most of my CDs for $0 - $10.
