Hello,

Yesterday I bought DNS-320 NSA device and I would like, that anyone at my home could have access to it. But I don't know how to do that, since tehre are 2 routers in house and some switches ^^

So firstly, we have modem. On that Modem is connected Router WRT160N. To that router is connected one PC (wired) and Laptop (wireless). From this router is also cable to my room and it's connected on another router Linksys E1200. On that router I have connected my NSA device and I'm also connected on this router with my PC (wired).

So how can those 2 PC-s connect on my NAS device? Is there any possible way?
And if I didn't explained that as I should, I made a picture of my home network build:

So is there any way that PC1 and Laptop could access my NSA device?

Kind Regards

Use the E1200 as a switch instead of a router, that will put everything on the same network:

http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html

on the E1200:

-disable DHCP
-give it a static IP on the same network that the 160N is on, but outside of hte 160N's DHCP range
-plug in the cable from teh 160N to 1 of the 4 LAN ports on the E1200

Everything on the same network, the E1200 can still be a wireless access point if needed.

you manage it with the static IP you gave it.

That's an awfully backwards answer. He's asking about how to get into the second router's config area.

Symcy94 - you'll have to access the E1200 initially from PC2. Look at the network gateway that the E1200 gives you (it'll probably be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.2.1) and enter that into the web browser. Once you're in, set the static IP of the E1200 to 192.168.1.254. This should be outside of the default DHCP range assigned by the WRT160.

Once you've set that and changed the cabling around, you should be able to access both routers from any device on your network.

What he's talking about is (part of his original description in the setup) is that when you setup the E1200 for acces point/switch mode, you must manually assign the E1200 an IP address. For example, if 192.168.1.1 is your primary router, you should assign the E1200 192.168.1.2

Your main router will see this as just another device on the network with a static assignment (btw, you should configure your primary router to start the DHCP pool ABOVE your static address. i.e. Start from 192.168.1.100-254, unless you feel you'll need more than 120+ devices)

Then all you would do is enter the address of the E1200 (if you assigned it 192.168.1.2, then enter that into your address bar). If you forgot to assign it, then you can always start over by doing a hard reset, disable wireless on the laptop (don't need this step if from desktop), and plug in a cat5 cable into any ports (DO NOT plug into the WAN/INTERNET port) and reconfigure the router. This time, remember to assign "This Router's Address". Just make sure you don't assign it "192.168.1.1" because that's already assigned to your main router.

hmm, i thought my answer was pretty straight forward based on his reply. sounds like he got through the config ok, and would understand my reply.

any additional clarification is always welcome, I hope it helps him!

I will have to take a look on that hehe

I just followed ''ch33zw1z'' instructions. Typed 192.168.1.1 in my browser and I was connected on E1200 that way. I disabled DHCP and set IP for the router (outside of DHCP from WRT160N). On WRT160N I checked settings and saw that DHCP have IP from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.149 so I decided that my E1200 will have .172 at the end.

After doing that I couldn't connect back on my E1200 to set up wireless password and that kind of stuffs ^^ I will now have to try things you guys mentioned.

And the main problem at all this is because I have VLC stream on my PC and iPhone. I could easily just connect my NAS device on WRT160N and use switch on my side insted of router. But wireless signal to my room from that WRT160N is wery bad, that's why I bought that E1200 so I can stream movies from my PC to iPhone when I want
If I would use WRT160N to be the router on with I connect over wifi with my iPhone, films that I would watch, will start lagging.

So that brought me to some isues ^^ But with that setup right now, everything works just fine, only that I can't add password on my E1200. So probbably I will just reset it and give it password first, and then repeat the steps I made before

You dont need to reset just enter 192.168.1.172 in the browser address bar and you can connect to it...One would think that should have been clear by now.

will try that when I get home hehe

But can anyone explain to me, why disabling DHCP makes my router like switch, but it can still be used to conect on with my iPhone over Wi-Fi ... I don't understand that that well ^^

it literally becomes an access point. If you enable DHCP, you'll literally have a conflict on your network with 2 DHCP servers (WRT160 and E1200) Unless you create a sub network, (to obtain an additional 200+ devices) you need to disable it, plug it into ports 1-4 (the switch side)

I personally would take the routers out of the DHCP and give them manual addresses. Who knows. Maybe your WRT160 will change the IP of the E1200, and then you'll have to search for it again...

And btw ... anyone know how to limit wireless bandwich for all devices on my WRT160Nv2 router?

My sister sometimes start downloading torrent at bad time and I get lagg or connection lost ingame. Right now I have line 15/1 MB and I would like to make some limit for all wirelessly connected devices on that router.

Wired device can have unlimited access.

I know it have to do something with QoS, just that I can't set that up to work as I would like to ^^

Any kind of advice/respond is welcome

And btw ... I was now able to connect on my E1200 router without chanhing anything ^^

It seems I setted 192.168.1.160 IP instead of .172 in the end ... that's why I was a bit confused

However, problem solved ... just need to find some way to set up my QoS now and limit wireless newtwork activity
