What ever happened to setting a foot on Mars by 2020? I thought we were suppose to go back to the moon in 2012-2014 not 2018.

That's a very misleading title. It's not the rocket that costs $104 billion, it's the entire program that will return us to the Moon.

Hopefully that amount includes building a self sustaining moonbase. Can you grow tomatos on the moon?
The bigger question is "Can you grow potatoes on Uranus?"

Why does it take so long to go back? If we could get there in a rusty tin box with computers that have the processing power of handheld calcutors, then with today's technology/resources it shouldn't be a problem.

Yay moon!

I remember when W was talking about building a base on the moon or some nonsense. I thought it was just something he was mumbling about while he was lost in one of his coloring books, or maybe bouncing around on his pogo stick, but apparently he actually ordered an aid capable of touch typing to write something up about it.

Astounding.

This moon stuff won't get any traction. Kinda stupid IMO. Been there, done that. We need to go to Mars!

the moon is the best way to get to mars. i would however argue that the moon is exactly where we need to go. does it make more sense to colonize the moon or mars first? the moon of course.

Dr Evil: "I put the freakin' Allan Parsons Project on the moon for less than that."

If you had read the article, they said that the vehicle taking the lunar capsule to the moon IS the shuttle replacement...thus it will already be in service by the time we go there, i think they said the latest for the retirement of the current shuttle is 2014

except NASA can never keep to it's estimates . . .

expect 10.4 Trillion dollars
[and at least a decade late]

maybe we could get Lucas and Spielberg to "do" the landing and we save the money
