I haven't ever had a BSOD with NT-based versions of Windows. And if they were really after something crash-proof they'd be running OS/2.

ZV <--Still clings to OS/2 as the OS that should have been.

Why do it $2000 at a time when you can just crash em into planetary surfaces at $2000000 a time?

Biggest waste of money ever... to send a mac to Mars?

The third fastest super computer in the world, the fastest supercomputer owned by an academic institution is at Virginia Tech.

It is a 10 teraflop machine and is comprised of 1,100 Mac G5's operating on a 1,100 node cluster. Cost $5.2 mil compared to $250 to $300 mil for the first and second fastest supercomputers.

More info here.

Of courses it isn't really that fast when you have to run your program twice just to make sure you get the correct results.

Somehow I doubt the error correction software program they wrote at VT consisted of running the calculation over and over until they got a repeated result. Anyway, they are now replacing the towers with the new 90nm G5 xServes which have ECC RAM. M4H (which I believe stands for Mac 4 Hire) will explain that for you - he wanted everyone in another discussion to know that he knows what it is, so humour him if you will and ask.

Thread in question

Let's review, thanks to Derango
1) Someone posted a quote from the web page where apple said it had EEC memory.
2) someone else posted and said that there was a mistake there
3) you then posted saying, no, there wasn't a mistake, that the server did have EEC memory

So please, All Knowing User, tell us - What is EEC memory? Is this some new technology that only you are permitted to use? Did you get it from Area 51 with your Alienware system?

Troll - well that's rich coming as it does from a guy that's just been boasting about trying to get a rise out of Mac users at the MacWorld Forum. I've not been here long but have yet to read anything informative written by yourself.

I understand Virginia Tech put their requirements out to competitive tender & were in negotiations with HP and Dell for some time before the G5s came out. In fact, I believe they had never used Macs before. I think you can trust intelligent people like them to search the marked for the best deal. I seem to remember that Dell was asked to build a similar supercomputer for the University of Texas (Michael Dell's Alma Mater)... $36 million I believe he charged them - it doesn't run Windows (I'm not sure but I don't think any of the top 500 do) - I don't think it is in the top ten...

http://www.top500.org/list/2003/11/

No, not in the top ten... it's twenty-sixth... did he really like it there at UT?

Getting a rise out of Mac users isn't exactly difficult or time-consuming.

PC User: Hey guys, I just upgraded. I'll be fraggin' you good at the next LAN.
PC Users: Lucky bastard. Bring it on!

Mac User: Hey guys, I just upgraded. I'll be out-crunching you in Photoshop in no time!
Mac Users: OMG, STFU, DON'T BRAG!

:music: One of these things is not like the other one ... :music:

I'm still waiting for the point here. So supercomputer prices can somehow be translated into desktop prices?

One wonders if you really are as unintelligent as you claim to be.

a bunch of nasa people were at my school recently to speak at a pathway day (we have these a few times a year for people interested in engineering or medicine or government to learn about careers). anyway, all the speakers had powerbooks, and all the prototype robots they showed (in Keynote of course) used thinkpads to run the software

ah, powerbooks and thinkpads, the two best computers ever

I'm very proud of my thinkpad 570

Yes, those people are probably way smarter than us as a general rule. As compared to say the general population...they probably make them look like monkeys.
This is the gang that confused Metric and English measurements the last time, right?
One thing I've learned about "group think" is that it is generally a point or two BELOW the worst person in the group.
<gratutitous facetious remark.....

those guys didnt confuse the metric and english units. it was the contractors (lockheed martin) who screwed up. search on google for the name of the mars mission plus lockheed martin.

most scientists are unix people, so it makes sense for them to have a unix portable

The only other unix laptop i can think of would be Tadpole (topdole?) sparcbook, which is not made anymore
