I know that NASCAR was more of a Southern thing when it was first started. Thus the redneck and inbred jokes. What I don?t understand is why people still think it is like this? Again if you have never been to a race you would not know. I have been to races in Dover, Martinsville, Pocono, and Darlington. Will be going to Dover, Martinsville, and Richmond this year. I have seen people of different cultures at every race. Probably the same mix as if I went to a football game. On top of that there is an effort within NASCAR to bring in more minority teams and owners. Most keep away because of the cost to start a team. Hendrick Motorsports is currently helping finance a minority owned team and they will begin racing next year. I guess I just don?t understand why people stereotype so bad. Why is it put into our heads that NASCAR is a redneck sport or that basketball is for one certain race and and soccer another.

Isn't it sickening? :disgust: NASCAR blows in every way shape and form compared to real automotive racing. I'm talking WRC, F1, Super Touring, GT, Le Mans... it's a disgrace that NASCAR gets all the publicity it does. It only proves how stupid some people are to actually enjoy the crap. I want the old Speedvision back.

Back during the late 80's, I raced a little MG Midget and then several Hondas in SCCA road racing competition. I really enjoyed it and looked down my nose at those idiots who only know how to turn left. I've scuffed my CRX against the tri-oval wall at Charlotte but the real men like us knew to take a hard left into the infield course right after flagstand. No self-respecting race car driver runs in circles.

Many years later I'm grateful that the Daytona 500 is actually on live instead of tape delay. I can't believe I can flip through several hundred channels and watch anything from WRC to the history behind Mercedes in F1. I love watching Supercross, unlimited hydroplanes and the air races from Reno. I wish more F1 races were televised but I loved watching the CART guys mix it up last weekend at St Pete.

The bottom line is it's all racing. Some of it appeals to a broader spectrum of the public and gets more advertising dollars...and of course more airtime. But it's all still racing and fun to watch

Kudos for good taste and skill, NightTrain! I've autocrossed SCCA once before in a VW GTI that was one of the most fun things I've ever done in my life. Watching car races rules, but I'll never think NASCAR or NHRA type stuff that Americans have put a bastardized twist on is fun to watch. It's allllll about how the Europeans do it.

GTI's were in the same class as my carbed 1500CC CRX. At 1800CC's and after a bit of "massaging" they were tough on the straights but the dog-looking-for-a-fire-hydrant stance in the corners allowed me to keep them in site

After the SCCA reclassified the injected Civic Si into the class, I begged my uncle to let me stick a cage in his and take it to Road Atlanta for the first race of the 88 season. During the first practice, I was following a GTI that drove down from the NJ area. When we hit the back stretch he was sitting big and wide in my windshield. Pounding the brakes coming up to the Nissan bridge, he was still right there as big as ever. I knew it was going to a fun year

I actually made it to the Runoffs that year but due to a brain cramp, dropped all 4 wheels off turn 1 at the drop of the green and watched the field stream by me up the hill. After the post-race inspections settled the dust, I wound up 6th. Disappointing way to end a promising racing career Coupla kids and quite a few years later, I still haven't gotten over it

HokieESM - Do your research ! the restrictor plates are to slow the cars down. At Talladega and Daytona they were going to fast to race with fans in the stands. Bobby Allison almost got in the stands airborne at 225 mph. Hence the plates. Not to equalize the series.

Pepsi90919 - How many passes for the lead in F! last year. 20 maybe, that did not involve the leader pitting? They had that many in the fall reace at Talladega! You may enjoy it more ,but it isn't superior.

I'm not stupid przero.... I know they slow the cars down. But they also equalize the cars a GREAT deal. And why do they slow the cars down? Do you know this? Here's a hint: they have so little downforce, they LIKE to take off above 220. And here's a little other tidbit of information: speeds at Charlotte Motor Speedway are LOWER in 2003 than they were in 1965 (especially on the straights)... yet those cars RARELY went "light". That's what we get for taking the team's ability to customize and work on their car's aerodynamics..... we need restrictor plates to "slow us down". And unfortunately, a restrictor plate also puts a "cap" on horsepower--which all the teams (especially the competitive ones) are hitting.
You are dancing around the issue. The restrictor plates came out in the early 70's. Why? Because in the late 60's things were getting out of hand. Speeds were going up fast as the BigBlocks made more and more power. You can thank Mopar for this too. It was the Hemi that was breaking the top speed records and once 200 mph was exceded, the tracks became nervous. Once the speed hit 220 mph something had to be done. The tracks weren't really designed for it and the insurance companies threatened to cancel their policies. Not to mention the domination by Mopar. The restrictor plates went on the fastest cars first. This meant singling out the Hemi. That is why you saw the change to small blocks in the 70's. The BB were no longer competitive because of restrictions both engine and chassis.

HokieESM - I believe you are wrong on this: "speeds at Charlotte Motor Speedway are LOWER in 2003 than they were in 1965 (especially on the straights)..." .I just looked at the fastest lap time at Daytona in 1970 and the avg. race lap was 170. Being the 'Cup qualifying record is 186, I doubt that lower speeds are the case. But, maybe... I'm still doing research. Having said that there is no downforce on any car when it's sideways, esp. at speed. Go back to the CART driver killed 2 years ago, airborne and history. But you are right the plates have equalized the speeds, but I don't think that was NASCAR's intention at least at first.

There are so many inaccuracies in this thread, it's sounds like politicians explaining the Social Security system.

StattlichPassat - Thanks for your insightful comments. Please wash your brain off when you tire of playing with it.
