According to an in-law, this thing is spreading throughout the country and it's not the flu - mild fever but congestion, vomiting, diarrhea...

It's pretty disgusting... And I'm out of sick days! Yay!

edit: don't know how to edit the topic, but this is more of a virus/bug than a cold...

Huh...I've never considered vomiting and diarrhea as part of a cold.

Anyway, I got some nasty sinus/throat/lung shit a few weeks ago and now have a lingering cough that won't go away. The wife got some sort of illness over Thanksgiving. She's not running a fever or vomiting, but the other symptoms are all present.

Well, it's more of a "bug." The more I read WebMD the more I think I have swine flu, but my father-in-law (a doc) claims that this is a common bug right now..

this isn't the sickest I've ever been, and I felt completely capable of going to work in the morning, that was until the bathroom breaks started..

That sounds like exactly what I had. Horrible sore throat, fever, exhausted, etc... Lungs eventually get full of shit too and eventually the sinus will run...oh will it run. I think my cough is going to develop in to bronchitis. Last time that happened was due to an upper respiratory infection...I had that shit for 6 months.

I'm seeing my PCP tomorrow, hoping he'll prescribe an albuterol inhaler.

I don't have it, and I Am Not A

(doctor - or any medical professional for that matter), but here's what I use for colds:

1. An Antihistamine. I take Claritin if I have to stay awake, or Benadryl if I don't. I also happen to have a prescription for an antihistamine nasal spray.
2. An NSAID (Aspirin et. al. Pretty much the only OTC pain reliever that isn't an NSAID is Tylenol.) I take Ibuprofen. But if you're under 21 or so, I'd avoid taking an NSAID if I thought I might have the flu.
3. An expectorant. Generally, Mucinex. That keeps mucus from building up in your head or your lungs.
4. I used to take a decongestant, but it made my heart race. If your heart can take it, you might want to switch to Mucinex D. You don't want "Mucinex DM" - that prevents coughing and you need to keep your chest clear.

Otherwise, the usual advice applies: lots of fluids (especially with Mucinex), rest, be careful what you take with alcohol, etc. Oh, and try not to spread it around to me.

i had this really crappy dry cough, it kept me up at night for a while. went to the doctor and took amoxicillin for a week, went away... now a week later it's back, but not as bad, but i think its going to get worse again!!!!! wtf!

I'm kinda worried that this may be the case...What sucks is that I feel like I'm sick every other month - bronchitis, stomach virus (kept me out of work for 2 weeks!), flu, now this... I'm completely out of sick days and could dip into vacation days, but have a feeling something nastier's just a few weeks away
