5-11-2006 Tennesse to Mandate ID for All Beer Sales

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - If the state's convenience stores have their way, anyone wanting a six-pack of beer in Tennessee soon will have to prove they are old enough to buy it, even if they look well over 21.

The House passed the legislation on a vote of 75-20 Thursday, and the Senate approved it unanimously last week.

Does it have to be state issued? Will your high school ID card work? You laugh....but do you really think their aren't any 21 year old seniors in TN?

I am not quite sure why it is problem to show ID to prove your age. I am 25 but look like I am 19. Heck, I get ID'ed to buy rated R movies as Wal-Mart. As long as there is a age requirement to do something they will need proof of your age. If you want to argue the point of having age requirements, that is a completely different issue but to say that needing an ID to buy beer (or any alcohol, tobacco, etc.) is right next door to needing an ID to walk around town is ridiculous.

National ID is a solution in search of a problem alright, but I'm not sure THIS is the best example of the whole stupid mess. It seems like kind of a stupid law, but I'm really not sure I see the difference between showing ID whenever the clerk wants to see it and having to show it all the time. It's part of buying alcohol...something I think is kind of stupid, but this isn't exactly a fundamental change.

Hell, here in blue Maryland, you can't even BUY beer in the convenience stores...I've never seen any alcohol sold outside of a beer store. It's kind of a pain, but not exactly a fundamental infringement on my rights

There are plenty of reasons to be against a national ID card, this is not one of them.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a National ID; especially in this day and age.

There are already scanners for individual state drivers' licenses, so what's the difference?! one ID for all Americans would go a longgggg way in solving ALOT of problems.

Actually, they do not really need to make a national ID they just need to make Social Security cards secure. I.E. put your picture on it and laminate it. Of if your against putting your picture on it, at least make it laminated.

I have no problem with a national ID. It's actually kind of a cool idea and I don't see how the government will tread on any individual rights. The feds know who we are and what we're doing already. Big deal.

If you look at the RealID legislation (it's online), you'll see that the information mandated to be on the driver's licenses is the same that is already on a license. All that is required is for existing DMVs is to check an immigration database to see if someone is legally in the county. I don't see a problem with this so far.
