It seems like every day, Americans are losing more and more of the freedom they hold dear. IMHO, America is slowly becoming a police state. Eventually, America may become like the totalitarian state envisioned by Orwell.

What do you guys think?

I'm not sure the NID, who will basically act as a conduit and advisor of information, will add anything to the Orwellian lock-down that this nation faces. I'd keep a closer eye on the patriot act, and individual agencies turning their microscopes inward.

No. It is a bitch slap to the CIA, NSA, and Defense Intelligence agencies. We have 15 different intel agencies all working seperatly. They will now answer to one guy, which is a blow to the DoD, which I think most people think is a good thing. Twelve of the fifteen intel agencies fall under the DoDs umbrella. On top of the Congress will have oversight of the NIE.

Then there there will be a Counter Terrorism Center thats setup like the Joint Cheifs.

The later IMHO is a GOOD idea, the National Intelligence Director I will remain skeptical about until I can see the legislation or executive order with my own eyes.

I think these fears are indeed realistic, although I agree with gyromind that this position in and of itself is not as scary ar the Partiot Act.

We are cowards who object to an interruption in our sitcoms and will gladly surrender our freedoms for a return to our TV. We have exactly the government we deserve.

I've never had any spys follow from home to school. I never had any problems with the Patriot Act (not that I endorse it). I think Dave and the rest are just paranoid.

I live in Canada, so I haven't witnessed these things first hand. And I'm very very glad I haven't.

I agree. I think it's a great idea but we still have the problem of the moron expected to act on intelligence. If all he (or Condi) can remember is that they were told it was a slamdunk . . . then we still need to fix an integral component of "intelligence".

Is it just me . . . but shouldn't the War President have noticed this . . . sometime before last week?

Hah, well she should have listened to the police. Are there signs that say no food/drink? You've gotta be some sort of idiot to get arrested for eating a candy bar!

Do local laws that in all probability existed before September 11th constitute a police state? If so, I am angry they took away my right to masturbate in front of Town Hall.

More big government to fail us. A real clear message after 9/11 would of been to fire the heads of both the CIA, FBI and maybe the NSA departments which failed us and the directors of both the CIA and FBI. The problem was inter agency rivalry and good old fashion big government bureaucratic incompetence. Instead of streamlining goverment and forcing agencies to work together or else, it seems our huge federal goverment is now just using this as a excuse to create even more big goverment. It's like creating more gun laws and bureaucratic offices to deal with high crime but not enforcing the laws that are already on the books.

I doubt America would become like that. I think other nations would fall much before the US if that became some sort of global trend. Many nations such as Canada, UK, etc. are already ruled by monarchies so it's not too much of a stretch for them.

What is the NID supposed to do? How would it take away rights? Is it like the Patriot Act?

You are wrong about the UK and Canada. The monarchy in the UK has no power whatsoever, they are only for show.

You think or know that I'm wrong. I think or know I'm right. Nevertheless, I think nations with caste systems such as monarchies will be the first to fall to a complete police state. Everything is already set up and ready for a single ruler to take charge. Most also have their own forms of Patriot Acts and other forms of restrictive legislations. Seems to make a perfect match for police state.

Actually, Canada is not ruled by a monarchy. We are a sovereign nation with a democratic system of government. The Queen of England at best is a figurehead and has nothing to do with how Canada is run.

It never occurs to you, that our criminal justice system, judical review and openess is set up to protect innocent citizens from abuses or just plain mistakes by lazy big government officials, you know like the buddist monk tourist incarserated for 3 years for taking photos of landmarks in NYC before FINALLY being let go to his family and children with no charges filed?
