<< How awesome it is to have so many good players that you can move guys away from their natural spot >>

van exel is a terrible floor leader. he's a shoot first, second, and third type of point guard, like marbury, but
without the athletic ability. his passing, when he deigns to do so, benefits mostly on the fastbreaks when he
has someone fast and athletic (posey and mcdyess) to finish for him.

lafrentz isn't a true center. he prefers the perimeter on offense and can't bang with the larger bodies on defense.
for a center, he averages 7.4 boards a game. that sucks. what is most telling about that stat is he's the primary
big body on the boards with mcdyess out on extended injury leave, which means his average should be alot
higher by default - yet obviously not.

nowitzki can take most power fowards off the dribble. he can bring them out to the perimeter and do as he
wishes with them. but he doesn't have the same flexibility with the small forwards because on average they're
faster laterally and quicker overall than he is. they kill his dribble penetration and force him to rely on long jumpers.

What a sucker deal for Denver!

They better hope Dallas goes downhill and they get a top lottery pick.

Great deal for the Mav's. I'm big on LaFrentz, and he's worth taking on Van Exel for.

I feel a little depressed cause there's officially nothing to root for in a Warrior's fan's life. Marc Jackson for Dean Garret and a 2nd rounder? Oh, PLEASE.............
They should have just kept him and waited. And they could have gotten a first rounder from Phoenix earlier in the year............

I hope the core continues to develop but they lose every game the rest of the year. I want Jason Williams. NOW!

I am a huge Mavs fan, not sure they got any better on this trade.

Salary: The mavs dumped Howard's salary, but took on a lot more. From DMN:

<< Denver general manager Kiki Vandeweghe forced his former team to take on several onerous contracts.

Abdul-Wahad, a little-used reserve, is due $33.8 million for the next five seasons. Van Exel, who ranked 16th in the league for scoring at 21.4 points per game, is owed $49.5 million for the same span. Johnson has two years at a total salary of $10.4 million remaining on his contract.

The Mavericks rid themselves of the $18.75 million still owed Howard. That probably will not be enough to keep them from having to pay a luxury tax on their payroll. The threshold above which the tax will be levied has not been determined.

I think this takes them out of the Duncan sweepstakes, which is a shame, because he is the only dominant player in the NBA, imo, that can rival (not stop) Shaq every time down the court. Also, LaFrentz is not a power guy. He blocks shots, but he is soft like Bradley. However he is a better offensive player and now the Mavs have two players that can block shots (like last year when they had Calvin Booth). But he could walk at the end of this season since his contract is up. Howard is not a big loss because he is a small forward in a PF body, he doesn't mash inside and doesn't rebound well for his position.

Van Exel plays 2-guard, and bigger guards are going to hammer us every night. Plus, he has a poor shooting percentage (just over 40%). The one big benefit of this trade is Nowitzki moves out of the C spot, which he had been playing a lot since Eschmeyer was injured and Bradley just sucks.

I don't think we ever had a legit shot at Duncan anyway, so I could care less about the lost cap room. LaFrentz is an upgrade over any center we've ever had. And unlike Juwan, he can actually make the WIDE open jumper! Van Exel should be great at sg. The guy may not shoot the highest percentage, but hs can slash and penetrate and open things up for the rest of the guys (something Fin has never been able to do). Plus I see him as a definite upgrade over Hardaway, whose ill-advised shots often disrupted the flow of the offense, to say the least. His leadership, attitude, and crunch-time killer bombs will be missed, but this trade was done for the good of the team.

LaFrentz is not any better than Howard stat wise except for blocked shots. Rebounding is about the same, and Howard actually has a higher scoring average. They just play two different positions, BUT, LaFrentz is going to be the fourth banana in Dallas so his stats might drop this year like Juwan's did. Besides, Van Exel is considered to be a trouble-maker in the locker room, Dell Harris ran him out of LA. Ah, lovely reunions

Not to mention Wahad's salary is ridiculous for a career 4 pt/game player
