NBA to experiment with three-point rule change in NBDL
November 11, 2004
NEW YORK (Ticker) - The NBA appears determined to lessen the impact of the 3-pointer. First, it will test out the change in the National Basketball Development League.
The NBA on Thursday approved a change to the 3-point rule in the NBDL for the 2004-05 season.
The change takes the 3-point shot out of the NBDL game until the final three minutes of the first, second, third or fourth quarters, but not for overtime.
"The NBDL gives us an opportunity to experiment with the rules of the game," NBA senior vice president of operations Stu Jackson said. "With these rule changes in our minor league, we will be able to observe how the game is affected and gather data from an entire basketball league in a season with like rules and similar style."
Potential NBA rule changes are first considered by the league's Competition Committee before being recommended to the Board of Governors. Changes require a two-thirds vote by the Board.
