I'm sorry for inundating you guys with all these Raleigh threads, but I'm both excited and extremely nervous. It was a nice place when I visited for my third interview, but I really felt out of place.

I just found out my bank doesn't have any branches in NC. Just one more change to add to our list.

So please give me a head start, recommend some places:

- Bank
- Grocery store
- Dentist
- Hospital
- Family Doctor office
- Movie theatre

And whatever else you think would be useful. And if there is any place I should avoid, let me know that too.

edit: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I need a place to stay! If I can't find a decent affordable apartment that allows pets and is only short term leasing, anybody here have room for a roomate?

- I use Wachovia for banking (I was with First Union before they were acquired, and just stuck with them). They have good online banking. I rarely have to step foot in a branch.

- Lowes foods is a good grocery store. Food Lion is considered bottom of the heap socially, but they do have good prices, I would never trust their meat.

I can't recommend any of the others on your list since I'm on the other end of the triangle (Holly Springs).

Well, I don't know where I'm living yet. Its either going to be in that direction, or in North Raleigh. I was actually looking at Garner - nice neighborhood, good real estate prices, but the commute time without traffic is 30 minutes - and I'm told the traffic gets really bad.

Garner is great as far as real estate prices go, you can probably get more bang for the buck. seem to be a growing area. Holly Springs is good because they are trying to be "little Cary" but is still a young town as far as that goes. They were (if not still are) the fastest growing town in NC. I would stay away from Fuquay Varina. Durham's crime rate is high, but there are many better spots nowadays. Raleigh is OK but if you have to rely on driving I40/440 in the heart of rush hour it can be pretty crappy.
There's alot of good stuff in Apex also.

Well I have a place in Raleigh and my girl (and me for the most part now) stays in Cary. Here is our places?

Bank; Me Wachovia. They are nation wide so never have to worry. Her, a credit union but none where her family lives so I have to handle the cash. I would use Wachovia unless you have special needs they can?t handle.

Grocery store; We mostly go to a super Target or Food Lion. We get our rice, some vegetables, and special foods from the Grand Asian Market ion Cary. Largest Asian market in NC it says.

As far as docs check with your insurance as they can tell you who they take and which are close.

Movies I just rent, d/l, etc? has not been anything out in a long time to make me pay the price they ask now.

- Bank - Wachovia (I'm with BoA, but have heard very good things about Wachovia)
- Grocery store (Lowes/Harris Teeter/Kroger - I think Winn-Dixie is actually bottom of the pile)
- Dentist
- Hospital - WakeMed, Rex, Western Wake, Duke, UNC - actually Durham is known as City of Medicine - plenty of medical options here
- Family Doctor office
- Movie theatre - Loews Cineplex - there are some smaller places too, including one that plays only indie and foreign movies in Cary.

And whatever else you think would be useful. And if there is any place I should avoid, let me know that too.

I'd avoid downtown Durham late night - avoid I-40, Hwy 55, Hwy 54 and Davis Drive during rush hour - avoid Wade Ave when there is a game at one of the stadiums there

Be VERY careful when driving. Don't be surprised when you see tons of pickups and broken down cars littering the side of the highways. When driving down any major artery, you will see plenty of cars waiting at the lights in the side-roads. They WILL wait until you get close enough and then they WILL pop in right in front of you at 2 mph - so check your brakes often.

4 hours to the coast, 4 hours to the mountains and 4 hours to civilization (DC).

- Bank - Wachovia and Bank of America are the two big NC banks. I bank at Wachovia. BB&T and RBC/Centura are other options.

- Grocery store - Harris Teeter is nicer than your average grocery store. I don't know how predominant they are in Raleigh area, but they own Charlotte. Food Lion is not that good imo. Lowes Foods is good if you have one near you. And if you are lucky enough to have a Super Target, then I would choose them. Charlotte has no Super Target inside city limits.

Harris Teeter is my favorite grocery store - usually well laid out and lots of selections. (Considered a little "nicer" than the Food Lions and Lowes as AU Tiger said). If you're looking for more specialty items there are a few Fresh Markets around (www.thefreshmarket.com) and Wellspring is the best organic grocery store in the Raleigh area. (Carborro/Chapel Hill has some co-ops that are great too). Also, make sure to check out the Farmers Market on the weekends - lots of good fresh produce, and cheap. (1201 Agriculture St. ) There are also a few seafood restaurants and the like there which are pretty good.

I bank at Bank of America right now, no complaints so far. As mentioned above, Wachovia and RBC are also big banks around here.

There are 2 major hospital chains: Wake Med and Rex. Wake Med has at least 3 locations I know of (one in downtown raleigh, one in N. Raleigh, one in Cary), probably more. Rex I think only has the one, but maybe some non-hospital sites also. Both are good, I've had more experience with Rex.

My personal doctor is Dr. Michael Stadiem - I like him a lot.
My dentist is forgettable, I'll probably try and find another one soon.

Crossroads 20 is one of the most popular move theaters around. It's in Cary - has 20 screens obviously. Staidum seating and all that. A few newer theaters have popped up in the last couple of years, none of which I've gone to but am told that they're nice but not a significant improvement. There's also the Rialto in Raleigh and the Colony in Durham which play independent films and, at least the Rialto, does weekend showings of the Rocky Horror Picture show.

Any other questions, feel free to ask.

Exactly! I went to UNCW and I moved to Cary after I graduated. I made the trip from exit 291 to the end of I40 when it turns into S. College Rd in Wilmington in exactly 2 hours. It does take about 4 hours to get to the mountains though.
As far as traffic goes, it's tons better than that crap they have to wade through in DC....civilization my ass.

Another former UNCW student. I went there as well.

And my girls family lives in VA near DC. I can say DC traffic sucks compared to Raleigh area. If you think raleigh is bad drive to DC and Raleigh looks great, even at 5pm on Davis or the other major roads here.

Bank: I've used BB&T forever. Nothing special, just using them 'cuz I don't care enough to change. I hear Wachovia & BoA are nice. I will say though that the people in the branches are usually nice. I just don't think they offer the benefits that other banks prolly do. Upshot is they finally stepped up their online access; it used to take damn near an entire week for transactions to update online. MUCH faster now

Grocery: I dunno why people are dissing Food Lion. Its cheap, they've got probly everything you need, and there are a lot around; esp near NCSU campus. Meat is hit or miss in terms of finding good, low-fat meat; but otherwise its fine. Harris Teeter is a safer bet if you want a one-stop shop, but is slightly pricier.

Tip: Be prepared for accidents with the slightest hint of weather. I dunno if its an NC thing, 'cuz it happens in Greenville a lot too, but anytime it rains the slightest bit here people turn into fvcking idiots on the road. Accidents all over the place, sliding around the road, driving like idiots.

Movie Theater: Unless you're a real cheap ass, avoid the $1.50 movie theater on Blueridge. Nights & weekends it is inundated with a certain persuasion of people who are very loud, very rude, and very annoying. I don't care if the movie cost $1.50, I don't like having the person in front of me on his cell phone through the entire movie. There's a nice theater out near 540, Briar Creek I think its called; stadium seating and all. Also the theater @ Cary Crossroads is nice.

And I know a very nice car guy if you need work done on your car

LOL! Rain, snow, ice, it doesn't matter, most NC people can't drive in bad weather. Last winter, I was driving on I40 after some icing the previous night. Saw several people spin out in front of me while driving over overpasses. Stupid people don't know that you have to slow down when it's icy out. Of course since I'm originally from Michigan, I have the gene that allows me to drive decently in bad weather

Wow. Food Lion is still around? Piggly Wiggly and Food Lion should have been put out of business ages ago.

I don't live in NC but it's like all other states. Wachovia and BoA are both headquartered in NC so both have big presence in the state.

Almost every state has SuperTarget, Walmart, Sams Club, Costco. Most Southern states have Kroger, Publix, and Harris Teeter. HT is little more upscale, then Publix, then Kroger.

AMC should be in every state.

Been here 5 and a half years...been to Wilmington only a couple of times. The one time I drove to the Outer Banks, it took me over 4 hours and no, I didn't get lost either. I was mistaken about it taking 4 hours to the coast - Wilmington is probably a little over 2 hours from Raleigh (it just sounded cooler saying 4 hours for everything ). And there are far more broken down vehicles that are abandoned by the side of the road here in the Triangle area than I have seen elsewhere - every single day, I would bet you $10 that I can spot a broken down vehicle on Hwy 55 or Hwy 54 - the number would definitely go up on I-40. These vehicles are just abandoned for weeks together! No wonder you never hear of them

The drivers in NC are second only to NJ in the utter inability to operate a motor-vehicle safely. That much is fact.

Bank-BB&T
Grocery-depends on whether you like them really nice, or cheap, or in-between. Kroger gets my vote for the last category. Harris-Teeter and Lowe's Foods are the nice ones.
Food Lion is your bargain place, and Aldi's is the ultimate dollar-saver.

Dentist...My dentist rocks, can pm you his name/#
Hospital...Wake Med
Family Doctor...no real opinion here...lots of choices
Theater...There are nice ones all around, with stadium seating and killer sound systems.

Congrats on the move. My wife moved here from PA about 10 years ago and wouldn't move back for anything.
And if you're a college hoops fan at all, this is the hub, the Mecca, the pinnacle of the sport, right here on Tobacco Road.

The broken down car thing is BS. Never heard that before, and I've lived here my whole life.
The bad drivers are a direct result of all the non-driving Yankees that have populated the area in the last 20 years.
From Raleigh, you are 2 1/2 hours from either the beach or the mountains. Yeah, some folks will tell you it's only 2hrs to Wilmington, and it is, if you run about 90mph the whole way. (and some folks do)
