Yeah. Eastern Time zone BLOWS for sports. Evening games are basically unwatchable for me since I have to get up so damn early.

Wouldn't that be better than 8 or 9 Pacific time? That would put the game a 11 or 12 Eastern time.

I think the idea would be to start the game at a reasonable compromise time like 8:00 EST.

Exactly. Because even "9:00PM" start times end up being more like 9:15 or later by the time they wrap up pre-game stuff, announce lineups, sign anthems, ect. The amount of pre-game yapping is completely unnecessary and could easily be condensed or cut entirely. It's just a time sink for commercials and product placement with very little functional value.

I understand that puts the west coast out a bit with a game starting at 5:00PM local...but at least you're not up till 12:30 or later if you want to watch the whole thing. Especially when you have teams that are based out of the east coast...you really screw their fans over a bit having such a late start.

I live in Lexington which is where UK is based. Last year when they were in the tournament they had at least 2 games that started at 9:00PM or later. I remember coworkers groaning about that and how big of a pain it was if they wanted to watch.

of course it would. But no one on the west coast wants to start watching games at 9pm, either. This model already exists in the first round of the NCAAs, with many of those first week games starting at 10 and 11pm, ECT. No one likes that.

the point would be to start games at ~7-8pm est at the latest.

When I first moved out west, I thought adjusting to sports times would be difficult, but it was well worth it. And if you have a DVR, any perceived (though highly irrational) assumptions about too-early sports times are easily washed away.

--major games tend to start ~5pm at the earlier (like Monday night football). You can DVR it and as soon as you get home, skip all of the commercials. Or, just watch the final 3 or 2 quarters and be happy, have the remainder of your evening left? win.

--national championship games start around 6pm. Holy shit is that not awesome? (That's a rhetorical question, obv)

--Sunday football: starts at 10am. How amazing is this? roll out of bed, fry some eggs make some coffee, and you have football to watch. You don't have to sit around like a chump waiting for football all day. Major games are over by about 4:30. Leaving you several hours in the prime afternoon, early evening to get some shit done. Yeah, if you want to do chores early in the morning, it conflicts slightly--but not like you want to watch the first quarter of every game, every week anyway, right? Or, again--DVR. and that game is essentially ready to watch at any time of the day.

If game will run so long you're missing a majority of the ending, why does it matter if it starts so late you miss it all? Excluding the Ravens curb stomping the Cheatriots in the first quarter a couple years ago, majority of games don't get decided early like that, particularly playoff ones where the final quarters matter even more.

Heh. I'll never forget the time I was rooming with our very own Pyonir in Arizona for a while. I was a Iowa fan and kickoff for their games was 11:15 central time. In Arizona in the winter that was 9:15. He woke up and came out to the living room and I was already drinking at 9:30 in the morning. Because...football.

Hungover and recovered by 6:00PM. Ready to go the rest of the night.

I expected Oklahoma to beat Villanova after the quarterfinal Oklahoma game in which Buddy Hield was just superhuman. But Villanova beat them so bad (around 45 points?) in the semifinal I figured Villanova had a terrific chance to win the final and I rooted for them. Amazing end to that game. I didn't get to hear the commentators, being in a noisy bar, but maybe that was best.

yeah, it's even better for college football, because of those 9amish starts. Sucks if your teams are pretty far away, though (like the opposite coast), and to meetup with nearby fan groups, which would generally be sparse in number, means driving an hour or so away to catch a game early on Saturday.

I gave up on that after my first two saturday mornings trying to watch football in the Bay Area.

as for early drinking...this is why the Bloody Marry was invented: Booze + Breakfast in one glass to accompany early morning sportsing.

Hell yes. Going to home Iowa games was the best part of grad school for me.

Learn to stay up later old man. You know that intelligence is correlated with staying up later, right? As well as the ability to stay mentally focused/alert longer during the day. That explains a lot - lower IQ people complaining about late games. Shit, I'm usually up late watching Golden State's games which start at 10:30EST.
So even though both groups were sleeping and waking according to their preferred schedule, night owls generally outlasted early birds in how long they could stay awake and mentally alert before becoming mentally fatigued. The fMRI supported the behavioral results: 10.5 hours after waking up, the early birds had lower activity in brain regions linked to attention and the circadian master clock, compared to night owls.

holy crap you're a fucking idiot. You really can't keep your spores out of a single thread, can you?

And for the record, I usually turn in around 1am, and it's never because I'm watching sportsing.

No shit. Most CEO's are up at 4:30 in the morning. I am too. Clearly I'm with a bunch of losers at that time of the day.

Well most people think that I'm insane to get up at 4:30 to run. So I'm not qualified to comment.
