NE one here running Gentoo linux?

I just recently (about a week 1/2 ago) installed from a stage1 cd and was just wondering if any of my fellow anandtech'ers are or have used it. If so what are your fellings on it? Good bad, I want your feed back Personally I am lovin it. I love the ebuild thing with emerge and that it works 98% of the time for me. I love how fast it is using the gentoo kernel. What do you guys think?

I run it currently, but may have to drop it because I can't get my CD-Rom to use UDMA modes.
Very annoying.

I'm running it as well, since last friday. Works great for me, with the exception of that I think I broke my network driver trying to get the $%^&*$! sound to work. Everything else works though, with those two exceptions. KDE 3.0 screams. Hell, it runs just a little bit faster than Mandrake did on the same box.

I was running it for about a month, then found conflicting libraries when attempting to install some newer apps. libpng problems all over the place and was causing MAJOR grief when using galeon, xine and some other apps. I went back to RH 7.3 and the problem is gone. There is apparently a lack of regression testing when they post new revs of apps and libraries for distributing. They need to fix this or start an unstable tree ala Debian.

Course if they do that, why would anyone want to use it?

It's definitely a distro for enthusiasts...

I like how fast it is. I'm running it on my P2-233, and it boots very nicely and performance is a lot better (under KDE) than with Mandrake 8.2 or RedHat 7.2. The compile times were extremely long (over 13 hours for the "emerge kde"), and the performance gain isn't enough for me to put it on my main machine.

Despite my belly-aching, I do like it. It's a nice step between a "everything including the kitchen sink" distro and a true do-it-yourself build. I really like the Portage/ebuild system (nicer than RPM, IMHO). And while I'm glad I installed it, I don't think I would be able to do it again; compile times are just too long on that system.

I'm using it, and I really like it. I do hate when a ebuild is messed up though. I've ran Gnome2, KDE 3, Fluxbox, WindowMaker, and Enlightenment on it. I've decided to stick with Enlightenment. I really like it's pager, and it's almost as fast as Fluxbox. I really liked Fluxbox, but I couldn't deal with moving my windows to my default spot everytime I opened an app. Enlightenment can remember window positions, and has more eyecandy. KDE and Gnome were too bloated for me, I just like a pure window manager. Gentoo runs best on fast machines. That is what it was really made for; to get the most out of your hardware. It flies on my P4 1.8a.
