Complete and total bunk. I await the Daily Mail article declaring it to be fully factual with bated breath.

Except hash collisions are inevitability due to the pigeonhole principal and in fact there are far more things that will hash to the same value than the exact information you are looking for.

Depends on the size of the hash and the max size of the data to be hashed. Of course eventually the hash length to guarantee a unique value becomes the size of the data.

This reminds me of a famous story about Jan Sloot. A dutch inventor that invented a revolutionary compression system but died afterwards from a hart attack.
A former Philips CTO called Roel Pieper was quite interested and according to some has saved the technology.

EDIT :
According to some, he did not use a binary compression scheme or the binary coding system.

The only way that's possible is if every compressed file could be reduced to an algorithm. Think fractal generators.

It was covered earlier, there are several perfectly cromulent approaches to de-embiggen your storage needs:

a) Lossfull compression - you lose everything, but the space savings are amazing!

b) Lossless, HD, compression in 1 byte: 42. The de-compression software is 50 GB though, and only de-compresses one movie.

c) Operator-guided de-compression, aka "monkeyType". A program generates every possible combination of pixels, frame-by-frame. Given infinite time it will "de-compress" the movie you are looking for, along with eleventy hojillion others. Want to see another season of Firefly? MonkeyType can do it!

I was also thinking of fractals, but what you write sums it up. Thank you.

The compressed data is replaced by an algorithm that in a more or less accurate way describes the dataset before compression. A unique algorithm for every unique dataset.
But that would require a lot of computational power on the coding and decoding side. A computation unit would be needed that could be rewritten/ adapted for every algorithm since every algorithm is different. For maximum optimization and throughput, fastest decoding. Possible to set computation rules before starting then performing the conversion.

Couldn't have said better myself.
The guy who created this miracle technology probably has leprechauns telling him to burn things. That can really get your mind going.
