I like the microsoft terraserver becasue I was able to do it without the download, Only thing is that the image I was looking at was over 5 years old.

It did come out last year, but it definitely didn't come out a year ago from now. More like 2nd half of 2004.

You are right because I remember marking the thread and downloading worldwind from the link in the thread.

Great thing about world wind is that it really brings the landscape to life because of the 3d elevation maps. I havent used it in a long time but it seems like it gave me a pretty good idea of how much elevation change i could expect on a few local golf courses. Of that is in the high res areas.

This is a BIG program. And it requires Directx 9 and the .NET Framework. I distributed the link to people at work. That was a mistake, because it took a lot to download and it took a lot to install. Neat program though.

How do you look at detail and zoom in on something? I can't figure it out. I'm zooming in. But it just gets blurry past the regional level.

NASA's World Wind is free. It has great global coverage (although Keyhole/Google is catching up). It has some more advanced options for selecting map sources, and includes the ability of using third-party image servers for overlaying all kinds of academic-type data (population, climate, crime, soil temperature (!?)).

Google/Keyhole has some much higher res maps of some major metro areas. For those areas covered by Google Maps, it adds all the Google features like directions, local search, and lots of overlays (roads, borders, labels, etc). Maps download faster than World Wind, and the 3D engine is way better (you need a decent video card). It also includes some GPS integration, which I haven't tested. Costs $.

Of course, this isn't a hot deal since it's always been free, but it's still a very cool app.
