HL2 was coded to use DX8. You have the option. BF2 uses the new technology, DX9. Your card does not support DX9, so it won't run it. BF2 is making calls to subroutines and code that your card cannot handle. Are they stupid for making a game that isn't backwards compatible? NO! Imagine how fun it would be playing online with a bunch of noobs than have computer 5 years old. DX9 cards have been out for 4 years or so. Get one.

like others have said there is no problem what-so-ever with the game.

That being said I almost guarentee you with a little bit of work you can get the game running without buying a new graphics card. The blank screen - to desktop is a pretty common problem

a) get the latest patches
b) get the latest video card drivers
c) google this problem (it has something to do with refresh rates and what not) sometimes just a reinstall can fix it.

Do some investigating and you'll probably find a fix. I'm suprise (even though I shouldn't be) that EA didn't have you do their troubleshooting first.

BF2 is a video card pain... I was lucky enough to have at least an ATI x300SE in my Dell stock. Trust me, if you upgrade your card, you'll be happier anyhow.....also, make sure you at least have 1GB of RAM. I personally suggest 1.5-2GB of RAM and you'll see a big difference in your game load times.

Hold up...just noticed you were on a laptop. Go to dell.com and do a search for refurbished. By a refurbished desktop for $300 and make sure it has a PCIE card in it and you're set. Upgrade the RAM later.

Are you running the latest Detonators (not that they update their Geforce4 code but still)???
Exit all unnecessary programs/services/processes (cleanup system tray)??? You're gonna need ALL of that 512mb!!

Make sure you've done all that before giving up...

So I say to myself (itll run choppy of course), I pop the discs in, disc 1, 2, and then 3.

The game is installed, WOOT im ready to roll ,and get me some headshots. I start the game up. my screen gooes black and then.... now im @ my desktop......

"okay man wtf..." So of course I give it another try (sometimes your pc just takes a dump you know? )..... same thing..... (so I give it another ~8 more tries before I get really heated.)


Im cruisin the EA support website (looking for actual help), I look @ their warranty information. It looks like I can get a replacement copy if I send it back to EA. (NOW IM PISSED). SNAIL MAIL OMGWTF UGH.....


I open a support ticket and explained my situation, how target stores do not except product exchanges for opened games movies dvd's etc. etc. But they will gladly exchange it for the EXACT SAME COPY. WTF NOT HELP MUCH ?

Ceaser D from EA tells me. Send it back, we will replace it for you, and send you back an unopened brand new copy, so that you may get your money back. SOUNDS GOLDEN TO ME, because thats exactly what I want back.

Come to find out if you REALLLLLY cruise their warranty policy ALL games that need to be replaced for reasons other than product defectiveness, YOU WILL BE SUBJECT TO A $13.00 NOMINAL FEE FOR PRODUCT REPLACEMENT.... NOMINAL!!!!?!?!?!?!?!!?!

$13.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! omgwtfbbq.

So lets do some math, $53.98 for original copy (cdset so there is more weight)
Subtract shipping costs to send it to EA (plus extra shipping for tracking method)
That is circa 2.00-5.00.

Subtract the nominal fee for product replacement $13.00

sad gamer loses $ 18.00 FOR A GAME THAT NEVER EVEN RAN.


There is no way to charge me $13.00 because of just business cost, because I didnt even get to create a game profile. the cd-key was only used to install the game, I didnt even hit the internet with it. so its completely still legit.

Not only did EA discriminate against alot of gamers, and overlook alot of game design, and marketing. They are MAKING MONEY OFF OF THESE RETURNS MAN.



I hope someone finds this story hillarious, or sad, or somehow pats me on the back for this b.s
