nec 1300a questions

Hi everyone,

With the hacked firmware for this drive, besides allowing it to burn to all sorts of media, does it:


1) Allow region free play?

2) Allow faster ripping?

Speaking of ripping, I have heard that the Pioneer is slow at this. Is the NEC better (quality) or just faster?

It seems that this drive and the Pioneer are very close in terms of recommendations. What are the pros and cons of each?

region free .. yes .. it just has to be the correct bios flash

faster ripping? prolly not.

I'm seeing that it's possible to increasing ripping speed on the Pioneer on dvdrhelp.com's forums.

Which is better at ripping?

i have 4 drives (not in the same machine but all used at one point in the same rig

speeds noted are from EAC secure mode DAE

Plextor 40x12x40 CDRW = 12x
liteon 48x12 DVD / CDRW = 4x =(
Cheapie 40x CD = 6x
NEC 1300A = 10x

those are audio cds

with DVD Shrink or SmartRipper .. the liteon ripped a bit faster than the 1300A.,

1300A is a great drive. Rip speeds audio or dvd are depended on how good the IDE drivers are for a system.

is this drive one of the better ones for DVD ripping/backups or is the Pioneer preferred?
