Staples has the NEC 1760v for $329 AR. This is a good deal. I did not find it on their website so I assume it is B&M only. I bought one. I'll compare it to my Dell 1800 when I get home.

$379-$50 rebate= $329 + tax

I very bid thank you to carmann for finding the rebate. This makes the deal IMHO hot!

This is 17" right ?

It's a decent price but even with coupon, tax makes this warmish.
Dell regularly have their 17" below $350 ship no tax.
Hopefully the price will go down again.

Basically, it's a sweet deal due to it's 16ms response time, but not as hot as you would think due to it being analog input only.

I think there is a rebate on this LCD

well all NEC LCD seems to have a rebate on them.

plus you can use a 40 off 200 or 30 off 150 if you can find one.

should make this under 300

I think amazon and outpost just had 17" 16ms lcd's for $300. Tiger direct has had 2 sales in the last month to bring a 17" 16ms down to $339 and $329. None of these has had dvi, but if i spent that much more i would sure as hell expect it.

Well I finally had an opportunity to do a side by side comparison of the 1760 and the Dell 1800fp.

First, I took a look at the 1800FP running analog and then digital. DVI is very slightly better but not enough to eliminate the use of analog. In other words it looked great under each interface.

Second, I ran the 1760 and the 1800 in a dual monitor setup using a ati 9000pro video card driving the 1800 with DVI and the 1760 using analog.

Results:

text: 1800 slightly sharper but the 1760 was also excellent.

Images: 1760 is very bright, too bright. I'm sure I can fiddle with the 1760 to bring it more in line with the 1800. The colors where more muted on the 1800, but more natural and required no fiddling. I prefered the 1800 and my wife prefered the 1760. Both are excellent.

Size: Yes, size does matter. The 1800 is a monster and the extra 1" seems more like 3". When I was comparing LCDs in the stores the difference between 15" and 17" didn't appear to be that great. However, the difference between 17" and 18" seems substantial.

DVD play: I think it was a little better on the 1760. I think the brightness was a real plus in this case. I saw no ghosting in either monitor.

Games: I don't do games

Resolution: Native resolution sucks! Text is just too darn small. Everything is too small. All test where run at 1024 x 768. The fact that both monitors performed so well at non- native resolutions is a testament to their display quality. I wear progressive lens tri-focals and find it impossible to use any monitor at high resolutions.

DVI vs VGA: I believe that in a high quality monitor VGA is perfectly fine. I also believe that brightness and a minimum 25ms response time is probably more important. I also believe that Text quality is probably a more important quality indicator then it is given credit for.

I paid $402 for the Dell 1800 and it is worth every penny. I went way over my budget to get it which is why I did not go after another one this last Dell sale. You have to draw the line somewhere. The NEC 1760 is a keeper. It really is beautiful and I saved some money too (there is also a $50 rebate on the 1760).

At the $300 price point I would be nervous buying an analog only monitor sight unseen or online where returns could be expensive or a hassle. I'm constantly tempted, but I have seen too many name brand and minor brand LCDs in the stores which exhibited poor display quality.

The NEC 1760 is a safe bet and a good buy. If I had not done the side by side comparison I'm absolutely sure I would have been blown away by the 1760.

When it comes to monitors the eyes have it.

I edited the original topic to reflect a $50 rebate. At $329 it may be time to take the plunge. I know you've been looking for awhile as I've run across you in other LCD threads. I have similar requirements and concerns but this really is an excellent LCD. Isn't school starting soon?

Also, I posted this deal on 8/21 and received 7 responses. Yet there was a repost on 8/26 that received about 17. I was wondering why my post got such a lukewarm response. The only thing I can conclude is the $349 listed in the other post. The repost included a $30 off of $150 coupon which, as near as I can tell is almost non existent. I guess it comes down to marketing.

Once again a big thanks to carmenn for the rebate "heads up". I'll probably post in the other thread since it seems to have the momentum.

Does anyone know if there's a $50 rebate on this monitor available to non-Staples purchases?

I bought this monitor for ~$325 shipped from Dell. It had a single dead pixel right out of the box. Fortunately, it's near the edge and isn't noticable unless the screen is completely black.

It performs well and the colors are vivid. I will try some FPSs to see if there's any blur, but with 16ms response I don't think it'll be a big deal.

Link to downloads & drivers from nec/mitsubishi, includes the Brightness controller mentioned earlier, and other drivers, ColorSync files, and ICC profiles.

I have a 15" Mitsubishi that I got from Officemax in the summer, works great on plain vga as a secondary monitor. As soon as I can find a cheap DVI cable, i'll move to that (In B&M stores like CompUSA and Best Buy, the cable is up around $80!).

this monitor doesn't have dvi does it? I realy wanted dvi...getting hard when this monitor is so cheap. It is a little dark, but no ghosting in any game or movie whatsoever.

I think you are right waco...I am gonna have to wait til after I get my intel mobo .

Anyone looking for an lcd...the seach ends here. When dell had it's 15%+15% bug at the start of the summer to bring this down to $360 it was huge. Now at a little less with tax it is even better!!

Anyone who wants the abolute best in lcd's should get this now!

oh btw...keep your eyes open for nec rebates...They have had rebates from $10-$30 in the last 2 months...just thought I would throw that out there...

I have one, I don't think I'm missing anything by not having DVI... I like it a lot. Blows my Hitachi 19" CRT away.

Finally, all our LCD questions are answered!

Read Anandtech article on LCDs: LCDs

I still think my 1760V was a great purchase and I was going to consider purchasing a second one (assuming I could still get this great deal). But, I will have to go back and reconsider the Albatron L-17ASD with DVI for $359 at newegg.
