NEC 3500 on cheap media

I have loads of cheap DVD +R media. My Optorite 201 (4X max +R) invaribly produced coasters on cheap media. It used to give me an error saying "Focussing error". For me more than speed getting these media to work is primary concern. I was just wondering if the NEC 3500A drives which have a better focussing bcos of its dual layer 16X recordable capability would work on my media.
My media are Sonic 2X (100 pak)
Ritek G04 (I think 4X) (50pak)

Ritek G04 work fine on both the NEC 25xx/35xx series. The new drives have better compatibility now, but bear in mind that the dual layer aspect will not make a difference on single layer media such as this.

I don't know what dyd Sonic use, so I'm afraid I can't help you there. But I would advise you to get the Ritek.

I've used two of these dvd-r's (id'd as ritek g04) and they were trash, the first disc burnt successfully but had very high error rates/slow read times. The second disc completed writing, but failed verification, testing showed the disc to be okay at the start and totally unreadable at the end.

For the record I used a nec 2510a 2.15 firmware, I've burnt dvd+rw and ridata branded g04 media just fine, but that newegg branded was worthless. Cheap media while it may be cheap in price, it may not be very reliable or useful for long term storage.

I used the same media McMadman (the free ones from Newegg) and so for i've burnt 2 and have had 2 great burns, no problems.

As I understand it, although they burn both formats, NEC drives tend to like the +R media just slightly more. So I think that you will be all set.

what brand is the media? My Plextor 708a doesnt have issues with any media, and ove only made a few coasters the were my own fault

*shrug* possible we got different batches of media and it's hardly worth my time to complain to newegg about a "free" item. my track record of 0 for 2 just leads me to believe that my remaining 3 are also going to be similar quality so they're disposable media, not for any serious archiving.

Perhaps burning slower or trying the hacked firmware would have made a difference (I burnt at 4x which is what the g04's are rated at) but that's just my experience so far. As always YMMV.
