How do I get my player to burn CDs at full speed? I'm using nero 6. and it's only showing up a speed of 32x when the drive is capable of 48x!

It's a very picky burner and won't burn many 40-52x rated discs at higher than 32x. I installedn a Lite-On combo drive to defeat that problem.

Damn it, what a POS burner. ARGH. I don't even think I can RMA it...or I'd have eat restock. Damn POS nec. Next time I'm sticking with Plextor.

I would try different media.
I bought a 50 pack of cheap TDK 48X media and they burn great at 48X on my 3520A.

Man no one even told me that it is such a POS.

I don't want that TDK media, it's useless. It doesn't come with cases. I can't store CDs with no cases. I guess I'll have to eat the restocking or sell it somewhere.

I am such a moron

You are...I won't say...but wtf, the NEC is far from a POS. Try installing the new firmware.

I've been trying to find a single mention about the drive on the NEC website and has been unable to find these firmware drivers anywhere there. And it is a POS.

I'm using all kinds of media with the 3520 and most are either oem CMC or Ritek but the retail branding varies (verbatim, memorex, etc.). I haven't had any problems with the drive burning to its spec. It's a CAV burner so it'll start burning at 16x and climb up to 48x towards the outer edge of the disc. Average burn speed would probably come out around 32-34x for an 80min CD.

All CD-R burners are like that with either CAV, PCAV or Z-CLV recording method.

The fastest CLV burners (same speed throughout the disc) were the Ricoh MP7200A and the Sanyo CRD-BP1600P which managed to do 20X from beginning to end. Most CLV burners topped out at 16x though and were discontinued ~ 4 years ago.

I'm using frimware 3.04 on my 3520a with rpc1 patch and rip-lock removed, you can get it from http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_file.php?site=tdb1&file=3520W304.ZIP

i've been using nec drives since the 2100 model and they are good. some of the best burners for the money. in fact nd3500ag besides being a spectacular quality dvd-r/+r burner also happens to be the fastest dual layer pressed / dvd+r reader on the market. unfortunately it's no longer available but i know people would gladly pay over retail for a used 3500. do your research before you make a blanket statement like that.

Odds are your problem is firmware. Go to the NEC site and download the appropriate firmware flasher. Run it. Post your results here for further analysis.

Okay, maybe "pirated" was the wrong word. My point is, some firmware flashers are made by idiots who don't know what they're doing (yet think they do). Unless you want to push your drive beyond its specified speeds, get official firmware.

Download the firmware here.

Jesus...no!

If you download firmware, get it from the NEC site. Pirated firmware can ruin hardware.

Are you fvcking serious? Do you know how much testing went into the development of this firmware and how many people have used it including myself?

And how the fvck is it "pirated"? The firmware is free, they just made modifications, for the better.

You're the guy who's cursing over nothing. And, while I'm not certain, I'm pretty confident that I know a whole lot more than yourself.

Maybe you should have researched me before you braved an insult....

Dude, if you knew me, which you don't, you would realize I "curse" all of the time...it isn't meant to be personal. And good job actually adressing what I said...I still suggest you actually read the thread. This isn't some hackjob done by a 13 year old, this is a serious undertaking to create better firmware for the 3520a.

I am equally confident that I know more than you, this being a good example.

Then justify why he should download anonymous firmare before he tries the official NEC versions.

NEC 3520 is not a POS, it's the best DVDRW drive there is, Plextor is for stuck up bufoons that have more money than sense.
