how are the reviews for this burner? I heard that this burner is great at burning, but kinda sucky at reading dvd's.

it's a fairly quiet burner for playback... haven't burned anything yet so dunno how loud it gets then... a well-built unit tho.

Hey. Bought it last week @ $91. Great drive. Are there any firmware that can make it burn all discs @8X? Does NEWEGG have a price guarantee since I bought it last week?

If you have good media (i.e. Taiyo Yuden) it can burn at 8x, but it can't do that with all discs.

I use DVDDecrypter, works with every drive I've tried so far. Newer versions of NERO should be okay as well.

I bit the bullet - bought the NEC, the 50pk of Riteks, and threw in the free 5pk of DVD-R. Figure with the Fedex Economy shipping being free on it all, this makes the deal even sweeter.

Then I went off to go find out how to make my DVD's from my BTV or SageTV recordings. How confusing!! Bitrates, resolution, D1, 1/2 D1, authoring, etc etc. I wonder if I'll figure out how to even use my new purchase :-brokenheart:

I bought this drive last week. Just got it in and hooked up thursday. I am overwhelmed with all the info out there on different settings, formats, etc. But I downloaded dvdshrink and used it to make backups of a couple of my dvds. It works fine. Not confusing at all. Even has all the "extra features" included. just seems to take a while to burn the disc to the hard drive.
