last nite I got together with my roomies and opened the casing of my dying monitor. we tried turning eac and every single knob we came across. as a result, focus is a lot better now but we could not get any closer to our quest of getting the brightness level back down to normal. right now i am in frustration contemplating if i should save up for a new one. after doing some reading in video forum i figured if i do happen to get a new monitor it will be either one of those two. how do they differ from each other? specs look identical to me, NEC being a tad bit cheaper. What about other monitors using the same diamondtron tube, say phillips?

They are exactly the same monitor, the Mitsu costs more because it's the 'premium' brand (NEC/Mitsu themselves told me this).

Yep, I got the mit dp 930 and it replaced the nec fp 912, they were the same monitor. I imagine shortly they will discontinue the nec 2141 and only have the mit 2070 as the high end monitor like they did the 19".

I got mine a dell. They had as good price of anyone and the best return policy. Most other places will not allow monitor returns and say you have to send it back to the manufacturer for a replacement. I sent you a pm midori.

damn... from dell.com dp930 can be had 31x - 30 = 290ish, FP2141SB-BK is 660ish after the coupon. is it really worth that price differential? right now i am quite content with 19''. but you know what they say, you never know what you are missing :|

EDIT : ahh the coupon is 30 off 400, so its more like 310 vs 660. even then its more than the double

Well I would say no. I have 19' and its plenty big. If you presently have a 17" or less then a 19" is going to be plenty big. You need to realize there are more problems with geometry and text sharpness as you go from a 19 to 22" because many people have a "average" video card and it just can not drive a 22" monitor. Thats why you see so many unhappy reviews of 22" owners complaining of blurry text etc.

I agree with Bucksnort. The difference between a 21" and 19" is not as great as that between a 17" and 19". I currently have an invar shadow mask 21" that replaced a broken 19" Diamondtron. The size difference simply isn't noticeable. Get a DP930 (razor-sharp text!) and wait for LCD technology to make the next big leap.

thx for your replies, i am more of a dvd/xvid/vidx/wmv kinda guy. TONS and TONS of anime watching, not as much of text viewing here... LEDs just dont do it for me with their washed out color and noticeably lower constrast ratio... DP930 seems to be a fine choice for now, is dell online still a good place to get it from?

Dell is where i recommend. If they dont have the deal on 10% off monitors then wait a few days to a week and they will offer it again. The return policy is really as important and more so than the price when it comes to monitors.

Dell is a good place to buy monitors from. I just picked up a 930SB from them. Unfortunately, the convergence couldn't be calibrated across the whole screen and there was a speck of dirt on the inside of the glass which I noticed on white backgrounds. I filled out an online form for an RMA and they are having a UPS guy pick it up tomorrow. Pretty good return policy. Just don't ever finance through them.
