NEC LCD2070NX vs LCD2090UXi

I'm going to be buying one of these monitors, but before I do, I have a couple of questions. First, does the 2070NX use only S-IPS matrices and nothing else? I know that Dell and HP and maybe a few other manufacturers use the bait-and-switch tactic; does NEC do this? Second, I will be using the monitor for CAD, Photoshop, text, gaming, movies, and TV; what are the benefits of the 2090 over the 2070?

NEC doesn't do panel lotteries, the 2070NX is S-IPS. As for your other question, while I'm probably the only 2070NX owner on this board, I really can't answer it. The 2090 is the professional monitor while the 2070 is the prosumer version; I just can't imagine the actual panels being any different.

I just got off the phone with NEC, and the person on the phone told me that the LCD2070NX isn't IPS. I asked him what panel it uses and he told he didn't know, but it's not IPS. I'm going to call back later and hopefully get someone more knowledgeable.

The LCD2070WNX is a TN monitor, and was actually released much later than the LCD2070NX. The LCD2070NX has been and definitely still is S-IPS.

I just got off the phone with NEC again and the person I talked to this time confirmed that it's an IPS. So, does anyone know what the major differences are between the 2090 and 2070 that make the 2090 cost a few hundred bucks more?

The 2090 is the professional monitor, it costs more because that's what NEC can charge. It's like asking why a Quadro card costs more than a GeForce, it's because the market will pay for it.

Looking at the specs, other than an additional year on the warranty and perhaps a slightly stronger backlight, they're the same. Certainly the panel is the same. At worst, if you check NEC's policies, the 2090 probably has a no dead pixel guarantee that the 2070 may not have (although my 2070 didn't come with any dead pixels).

An extra 3-400 dollars for insurance and perfection...no thanks. I'll just buy a new monitor if anything.

I've read reports of this monitor emitting a high pitched noise when there is solid white on the screen such as when viewing web pages. Have you experienced this?

I'm using a Dell 2001FP right now with the LG.Philips LM201U04 S-IPS panel and I've been spoiled; I don't want to look back at anything else. IPS is the only way to go for me, and I don't feel like playing the lottery with HP or Dell. This is also another reason why I'm not letting go of my IBM Thinkpad T60p with the Flexview IPS display. My school has offered to replace my T60p with a T61p, but I turned down the offer.

I ended up getting a brand new LCD2090UXi on eBay for $550 shipped. It should arrive on Friday.
