Has anyone heard anything about this drive? I've been looking at the DVD-DL drives for some time now and had pretty much settled on picking up the new Sony. But then I was browsing newegg and noticed this. It seems like a super good deal. In fact it seems too good to be true. The only review I could find gave it a 9/10, but it was some noname site i found on google. The Sony DVD-DL drive is $160, so this NEC is a huge savings. I know a lot of disk drives are based on the exact same chipsets and whatnot. What do you guys think?

I was looking at that exact same NEC drive. I'm just wondering if I should buy it now or wait 2 more months. I guess it depends on what you're going to use the drive for. I'm looking to get a DVD burner for data backup and dvd movie backups. Backing up a Full DVD movie on a Dual Layer disc at 2.4x sounds like it would take forever...

Did you buy this drive:
GSA4120B 12X SUPER-MULTI TRIPLE FORMAT DVD WRITER?

It does not burn Dual Layer but simply supports it meaning that it will read DVD+R DL burned discs. Big difference.

Maximum Write Speed: 12x DVD+R, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD+RW, 4x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW

Does not list a DL speed in the specs.

I bought one and then after 2 coaster I returned it. :disgust:

Used the same media that my Pioneer 106 burned without problems yet this burner burned 100% but the disk had crc errors, burned 2 to be certain.

Also it had problems reading some of my dvd's that I had previouly burned with my pioneer drive that worked perfect before...

I was not impressed with the drive and retuned it,I ordered a pioneer 107D instead.

The drive seemed to work ok but it didnt like my media, but it's no use to me if it cant burn cheaper media like the Pioneer did.

I could have bought better media but I dont want to have to spend 2 to 3 times the price for media if the pioneer burns them perfectly.

What media ? I am using the Ritek 4x DVD-R and I just ordered one of these (should be here in 2 days)
And I never burn over 4x, usually 2x to be sure of a good burn on 4x media

You should be ok, mine were very cheap media but i have about 100 of them

So i need a burner that will burn them correctly,I think the media code was AN31

I can add another compatibility data point. I put one of these drives in a comp for my little brother recently. It burned 4 or 5 CD-R's (in Nero 6 w/ full verify) without any problems, brand was a mix of PNY and Imation discs. I also tried out reading some of my own DVD-R backups burned with my Pioneer DVR-104 (media was all Ritek DVD-10's, but some dating from up to ~3 years ago, some just this year) and all read fine. Surprising I've found the more recent discs are the least compatible re getting them to read in various drives, although it apparently didn't matter in this case (and usually doesn't with the newer drives I try).

TDK burners are rebadged NECs.

Cool. I learned something new today. ^^

In fact, if you look at the sticker on top of a TDK DVD Burner, you will see NEC followed by the NEC model #.

That's a little bit disconcerting. Does that mean that most existing DVD-ROM and DVD multi-format burners, will not, by default, be able to read dual-layer burned discs, even if they are capable of reading dual-layer pressed DVD-ROMs (most DVD movies, I would assume)?

Yet another nail in the coffin of dual-layer compatibility if that's true.

The 2510A rules.... I own one, and have had no issues. Even am able to burn at 8X on most 4X media.

When I'm wrong, what can I say, I'm wrong. But the LG website does not properly describe their drives capabilities.

Check out the review of the GSA-4120B here.
