Did you try a search? There have been at least 2 threads recently that discuss the same thing.

I do video and swear by Pioneer. The 108 is now in the lower $80's at Newegg.

Hey fanbois, back up your suggestions! Anyone can yell out a brand because they probably own it. I for one, own a NEC 3500A and I recommend it as well as the Pioneer. They both use NEC chips and both produce high quality burns. Plextor and Liteon have amazing CD-RW reputations, but they aren't much to talk about when it comes to DVD-RW.

umm... as far as I can tell, NEC and Sony DVDRW's both seemt to be rebadged optorite drives, which are both awesome in their own ways. Pioneer, seems to make their own (very good experience with their slot loading), and from what I've heard, is currently the most dependable, rock-solid brand out there within a reasonable price. Now if money is not a factor, Plextor is always the best, and have yet to lose their top spot ever since the 12x0x32a. They get their chipset from Sanyo, which is shared by TDK, and as such are both more expensive, but leading the industry in quality and technology.

do check out the TDK 16x dvd writer. I believe they offer 4x writting capabilities for DVD-DL.

I wonder why no reviews actually high light this issue.

the NEC and the Pioneer 108 also does 4x DVD-R9 (dual layer), kelvin.

Either way, you won't be burning at 16x - I read a nec 3500a review stating that it actually burned faster at 12x than at the unstable 16x

I would go for Pioneer. They have more frequent BIOS updates although they tend to be a little bit more pricey. Performance wise, NEC was a little bit faster but with recent Pioneer updates, it may be faster now.

I have my NEC 3500a and love it also..

Burning some TDK 4x @ 8x great.

As far as 16x? Meh, if media EVER comes out from Fuji we will have and issue.. (Set aside once RELIABLE media is available )

12x is quite fast, and if you REALLY need faster, i'll sell this for 50 bucs and pick up a new one..

is it true that bit setting is critical for certain xbox models?

also, anyone think that there's a good chance that pioneer might update the drive to include bitsetting?

I think that dvd -r media is already set to DVD-ROM, from what I remember reading (through discussion and links from these forums). Please correct me if I'm wrong (hopefully, I'm not). To test this, I ripped an iso of a game I had and burned a dvd -r; my xbox read it without problems.

If you can wait until October, Plextor is releasing a new drive called the P716A. It's going to have 4x DL capabilities. It will also debut at $149.99 retail.

Both the Pioneer and NEC can burn DL at 4x already.

---

I'd go with NEC b/c it can burn CDR at 48 vs Pioneer which can only burn CDR at 32. With new firmware you are getting equal quality burns. The TDK is a 3500 rebranded. The Pioneer can never be faster than the NEC b/c it burns using Z-CLV. Essentially it really isn't a 16x burner. Re: 12x vs 16x I also have read that re 12x and 16x. I disagree, I am getting 6:30 on a 16x and noticably slower on 12x.

I have an nec 3500a

The plus: does fujifilm TY dvdrs 8x at 16x with ease

The minus: I chose this over other ones because it writes cds at 48x according to their spec. BUT i didnt know NEC limited the speed to 32x on certain CDRs, like Fujifilm TY

Just to let you know, just in case cd burning speed was a factor you are considering as well
