(NECRO) Does your tempurpedic suck? are all foam mattresses the same?

So a few years ago i bought a tempurpedic mattress, based on the fact that i like it in the store, and i was sick of beds that sagged from not even that much use. (I do a lot of sitting up and reading/browsing the web in bed, so i spend more time sitting up in bed than most.)

My problem with the mattress is that right when you get in it, its fine. When it heats up, the mattress gets softer - which sucks. The warmer parts are around your mid-section, and what happens is your mid section sinks in, and you basically have no support. Its like sleeping in a hammock.

Now there are times when my back is so messed up from laying in that bed that it takes me a few minutes to straighten myself out before i can do anything.

If the bed maintained its firmness, im sure it would be fine, but it just sucks that it sinks like that.

Im going to try to get tempurpedic to replace the mattress to see if maybe i had a bad one or something. (I hope they dont break balls because of a very small wine stain on the mattress)

I really wouldnt mind going back to a normal bed - but i need something that is really durable and wont sag. Whats better for durability - a soft or firm mattress? what about for a bad lower back?

Wheres a good place to get a decent cheap mattress anyway? I think i ended up going with the tempurpedic last time because i got tired or comparing matresses, and i felt like it was a popular mattress.

There are different lbs of memory foam; you need to make sure you get a good one.

Alternatively: bed-enthusiasts are all about using latex layers and rolling their own bed.

the problem is the responsiveness to body heat. Its actually a pretty firm mattress, but after being in it for an hour or two, its ridiculously soft in the middle, and firm where im not laying. When its hot, it doesnt even respond like memory foam, just imagine the middle of the bed made out of light sponges and thats the effect im getting.

So is this how all foam mattresses are?

And i also had a latex bed - ended up sagging after a few months. Tried it again, and the same result. So i took that store credit and applied it to get this POS.

I just want a decent bed that wont sag

A good hard innerspring a solid box-spring with ply-wood just over the box-spring.

Also NEVER use a standard bed-frame; only use a solid-bottomed bed.

Spring mattresses can also benefit by the support of the solid wood surface of the Sleep Science Folding Mattress Foundation.

I got my tempurpedic bed about a year ago. Love it - best bed I've ever slept on. If yours is a few years old, it might be part of the older generation of tempurpedics... when I bought mine, I had read that the new design is much better than it once was for better support/not causing you to overheat/etc.

We have a Sleep Number bed it's pretty damn nice.

Especially since it's a queen size, dual zone, remote controlled job that we got for free

I test drove the Temperpedic and decided I would (and, more importantly my wife...) sweat to death on the thing.

We have an extra firm mattress and box spring, and I'm about ready to put a sheet of plywood under it. I have a bad back and this old thing (granted, it's past it's prime... but we don't have the money for a new one...) isn't helping. Years of sleeping in an Army cot and a truck sleeper took their toll...

I'm looking hard at the Sleep Number bed... It sure looks like a win-win.

the day I give up my tempurpedic is the day someone pries it from my cold, dead hands.

I picked up a foam mattress dealio from Amazon. It's amazing and much cheaper than the name brand stuff. I really miss sleeping on it right now, damn moving!

10+ years and going on my tempurpedic bed. other than the inner cloth sleeve ripping its still good. no way i can go back to a regular mattress now.

little off topic, does anyone know the density/build quality of a bobopedic compared to a tempurpedic?

I hate them just because of the heat alone. Have been at a few hotels with them, and I always overheat. They keep your body heat right on you and I'm uncomfortable all night.

I don't like the Tempur-Pedic at all - too hot and it's a horrible surface for, er, rhythmic activities. I also find it kind of exasperating to think of paying thousands of dollars for what must literally be less than $50 in materials. I know the R&D is expensive, and thus I have never balked at paying $100+ for a bike helmet made principally of Styrofoam, but since inner-spring mattresses are made of costlier materials and have much more complex manufacturing processes, the pricing of TPs seems unreasonable.

To me TP is the Bose of mattresses.

My wife and I just purchased the TP Rhapsody and love it so far. Which model do you have?

Another thing to keep in mind is that you will tend to maintain 1 position on any foam mattress. Heat is naturally going to build up. Have you tried one of the covers for the mattress that help dissipate heat and moisture?

lose some weight
not overweight, so not gonna happen. Even if i dropped down to the weight of a little girl, the weight isnt the problem, my bodytemp makes the bed soft.

Im not hot at all on it, the mattress gets to body temp, and then it gets super soft.

I hate you. Wanted that when i bought this, but it was just way out of my pricerange. Even more than the TP.

I think some people here are misunderstanding my issue - which is the mattresses response to heat. For example.

If i threw a 300lb manican on my bed, it would "conform" to it, but still maintain its firmness. If i put a 100lb manican that was heated, it would sink and cause the material to just be like a normal sponge. It completely loses its feel.

I dont know if this is how all TP's are or if its just mine. Im calling them today to see if i can get mine replaced, but i have a feeling that unless their material has changed, the same thing is going to happen.

Like someone said on this thread... there are different types of "memory foam" type mattresses with different lbs (density). Usually the really cheap ones are less dense. There are ones with that have better build materials and added stability.

But the human body is designed by nature to sleep on hard surfaces. There were no soft beds or memory foam mattresses for our ancestors and they sleeped pefectly fine.
