I'm relatively thin (6'3" 200) and bought one of the firmest tempurpedics. It's really quite comfortable.

Not all memory foam mattresses are created equally. Memory foam is sensitive to both weight AND heat, and the level of sensitivity is determined by the density of the foam. The HIGHER the density of the foam the MORE sensitive it becomes (you sink further in). So it sounds like the OP has a mattress with a thick top layer of high density foam. These are often more expensive than lower density mattresses, but not necessarily better if you do not want to sink in so far.

Unfortunately there's not really an inexpensive fix for this that I can think of. If you don't want to replace the entire mattress, you could try getting something like a natural wool topper, although these can cost several hundred dollars depending on this size and quality. The idea there is the wool is a naturally "breathing" fiber that allows better air flow / heat dispersion and should minimize the heat sensitivity of the memory foam. So it would actually make your mattress feel softer at first, but you should sink in less over the course of the night. I do not have any issues with my memory foam mattress as it is, but I am considering getting one of these anyway.

I bought a bargain version 10" 3 layer foam mattress from Amazon, and firmness isn't the issue. Sometimes its just too hot. If anything I could go softer.

I don't like the Tempur-Pedic at all - too hot and it's a horrible surface for, er, rhythmic activities. I also find it kind of exasperating to think of paying thousands of dollars for what must literally be less than $50 in materials. I know the R&D is expensive, and thus I have never balked at paying $100+ for a bike helmet made principally of Styrofoam, but since inner-spring mattresses are made of costlier materials and have much more complex manufacturing processes, the pricing of TPs seems unreasonable.

To me TP is the Bose of mattresses.

R&D was paid for by NASA

This is partly true in that Temperpedic is the name brand of memory foam. They have nothing proprietary, and they get the foam from the same suppliers as everyone else.

However, viscoelastic foam is EXPENSIVE. But not nearly what TP charges. The total materials in queen memory foam mattress is probably about $300 for TP, including labor (much lower because of volume).

Sources: father owns a mattress company and worked there 8 years starting at age 12.

So a few years ago i bought a tempurpedic mattress, based on the fact that i like it in the store, and i was sick of beds that sagged from not even that much use. (I do a lot of sitting up and reading/browsing the web in bed, so i spend more time sitting up in bed than most.)

My problem with the mattress is that right when you get in it, its fine. When it heats up, the mattress gets softer - which sucks. The warmer parts are around your mid-section, and what happens is your mid section sinks in, and you basically have no support. Its like sleeping in a hammock.

Now there are times when my back is so messed up from laying in that bed that it takes me a few minutes to straighten myself out before i can do anything.

If the bed maintained its firmness, im sure it would be fine, but it just sucks that it sinks like that.

Im going to try to get tempurpedic to replace the mattress to see if maybe i had a bad one or something. (I hope they dont break balls because of a very small wine stain on the mattress)

I really wouldnt mind going back to a normal bed - but i need something that is really durable and wont sag. Whats better for durability - a soft or firm mattress? what about for a bad lower back?

Wheres a good place to get a decent cheap mattress anyway? I think i ended up going with the tempurpedic last time because i got tired or comparing matresses, and i felt like it was a popular mattress.

OP, your location says Connecticut. Go hit up Bob's Discount Furniture - they have the "Bob-o-Pedic". I got a Power Bob a couple years ago...absolutely awesome. I recommend them to friends all the time. Just like a Temperpedic for half the price.

Plus, free ice cream in the store

Like someone said on this thread... there are different types of "memory foam" type mattresses with different lbs (density). Usually the really cheap ones are less dense. There are ones with that have better build materials and added stability.

But the human body is designed by nature to sleep on hard surfaces. There were no soft beds or memory foam mattresses for our ancestors and they sleeped pefectly fine.

What kind of dumbshit logic is that? They also didn't have medical care, died of easily treatable infections and raped goats. That doesn't mean it's ideal or even preferred anymore.

My ideal mattress after having been spoiled a bit in that department is a mattress with a 6-inch latex core with a lower density memory foam layer ontop of that, with a thin, high-density layer on the top. The high density allows good conformation of the body, the soft layer allows it to sink a bit (I like soft mattresses), and then the latex provides a bouncy, spring-like core.

The ideal is the custom his side-her side memory foam matts for mismatched preferences. They're very easy to make.

BMI is a really bad indicator of how healthy someone is. For example, someone with a BMI of 29 is "overweight" and is 1 point away from being "obese"

Here is that person:

yep thats 6'1" 220 Adrian Peterson

Not saying i look anything close to that, but im 5'9" 180 with a lot amount of body fat (i wear a 31" pant) That would make my BMI 26.6 and classify me as overweight as well.

And if its just me then i have a faulty mattress then. I can tell you if i put a heating blanket on one side, that side is substantially less firm than the other...

Which model of TP did you get? We have the Rhapsody and it's really firm, I think the only more firm about it is "then Grand". I don't experience this problem and I weigh more than you.

Get the best of both worlds: a decent firm coil spring mattress with a 2" high-density memory foam topper. Even if the 2" topper sinks through, the coil spring mattress will support you while the topper can still help distribute your weight.

Well really i have no preference towards memfoam, i just got it because i thought it wouldnt sink in, and would be the best buy based on reviews, and the store credit i had from returning my latex bed.

I need to go find a hard bed that is durable, i dont care too much about the foam.

So just stick with coil springs then.

mattress on the floor is always the most comfortable to me, but i hate that it's so easy for mice and roaches to crawl in the bed that way.

Might try to see what you bought, there should still be a tag on it some where. Then feel that one in a store and compare it to some higher end TP models while bringing up the heat issue.

we always had beds. chimps find soft warm things to lay on, and we always have too.

i think the best mattresses are the individual coil spring ones, with either a pillow top or a 1" memory foam layer. i like a soft top but i agree, you cant sag in the middle and thats what happens to any air or foam bed imo.
