I ordered one too. Tax is a bit more for NY residents, but still a great deal for a good looking switch.

Should I get a 5 port or 8 port? My friend says I should get the one I need. But an extra 3 ports for $9? I need some answers!

I was wondering the same thing. Why buy a 5 port hub when you can get an 8 port hub for $8 more? I would definitely get the 8.

I ordered the 8 port switch 2 days ago. I hope it is not a refurb coz I just hate having to return stuff. Anyway, mine is on back order.

Hubs divide their max bandwidth across each port...so if you have 10 ports on a 100 Mbps hub, then each port will only have 10 Mbps of throughput. This is good for limiting network usage by client connections. Hubs are generally less efficient than switches, and personally I would not use them in any network I build.

A switch allows max rated bandwidth for every port, so a switch running at 100 Mbps gives you 100 mbps on each port. Switches are the way to go if you want max speed.

One quick clarification to SsZero's post: if you have 10 computers attached to a 100Mbit they are not limited to 10Mbit of bandwidth each. The limitation is that all the computers on the hub have to share the total 100Mbits worth of bandwidth. Therefore, you can transfer a file between computers 1 and 2 at 100Mbits, assuming 3-10 aren't yapping about something else. The advanatage of a switch is that computers 1 and 2 can talk at 100Mb at the same time that computers 3 and 4 are talking at 100Mb. With a hub, each pair would only get 50 Mbits worth of bandwidth.

From what I've seen, a 100Mbit hub is sufficient for most home networks.

EDIT 1:
I forgot to mention that at this price, there's no reason not to get a switch, though!

EDIT 2:
A question for the forum... does it matter that id doesn't have an "uplink" port? Would I have a problem with uplinking this switch to another one? Thanks...

You'd need a cross-over cable (upllink cable). Use it to connect any "regular" ports on two different hubs/switches together.

Very nice prices! If I didn't have two SMC switches, I'd jump on those. They must have been on sale for a while -- Ebay is flooded with SOHO switches that nobody buys. So if you're thinking of unloading these on Ebay, don't expect to make a fortune

My switch actually came today, without any confirmation e-mail, shipping date, or anything. I was in my underwear when the ups guy came. And its brand new, shrink wrapped and everything.

When/what time did you order your switch?

I keep hoping that mine will ship even though I don't have an email!

Damn freebee, I literally had to email them back about my order. I used the notification they gave me and replyed back to them. It turns out that MY ORDER had already SHIPPED! I should be receiving it soon. But then I got another email saying that they are delaying my USB to Ethernet adapter til 1/10/02. They can take their time with that. I don't even care. All I know is that my 8 port switch is coming in soon!

*Don't worry Maukdaddy, it's probably the same situation for you.
