I am looking to upgrade to a big screen from 1280x1024.

I can afford a 24" right now with a budget of $350 max.. IT HAS TO BE 1920x1200 and 3 years warranty is preffered.

It will be mainly used for reading e-text books. So the bigger the better. Thats the main reason for upgrade, I don't want to keep scrolling like I do on my 18" .

I'm looking to buy only off newegg.

Right now I am looking at these monitors

1. Acer X243Wbd Black 24" 5ms

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16824009152

How's the warranty on Acer LCD's ? I can't even find this monitor on Acer website, whats wrong ?

2. SAMSUNG 2433BW High Glossy Black 24"

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16824001309

I read in newegg reviews, this monitor stand has problems. Is this better than the ACER one above ?

3. SAMSUNG 2443BWX Glossy Black 24" 5ms

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16824001295

Hows this one different from the one above ?

4. Acer P243WAid Black-Silver 24"

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16824009125

Hows this one different from the ACER above ?

I haven't used the other 4 monitors, but I can say that I really like my acer x243w. Lots of space, it's really cool to have two txt documents up side by side at a good size.

never seen or used any of those LCD's but i DO have a Samsung Syncmaster T240 and its pretty great. backlight bleeding very even and viewing angles are great (i have no idea what people are talking about. i never look at my monitor from the top or the bottom (do you?????) and from the left and right when i sit away from my desk, movies still look great.

i'm not sure what that guy is saying about his Acer x243w "lots of space...blahblah." thats the SAME FOR ALL THE 24in MONITORS. they all have the same 1920 horizontal resolution.

I agree totally. As long as your in front of the monitor it is great. But, no I was just saying about the txt side-by-side thing because be said he was going to do ebooks. But other than that I play a lot of games on the x234w and I havent ever had a problem with ghosting or anything. I was just saying this monitor doesn't dissapoint me.

be careful of newegg's return policy...if you have less than 7 stuck pixels or something like that you're stuck with the monitor and they will not rma. bestBuy or the like will be less of a hassle should you find it to be inadequate.

I don't know why people say you have to watch out for newegg's return policy. I bought 2 monitors from newegg and had no problems. Both had 0 dead pixels.

In the worst case scenario you might get 1 stuck or dead pixel. Stuck pixel can easily be popped out.

Thats just saying you lucked out and got no dead pixels. People say be careful because newegg return policy on LCD is quite sucky. Why would you want to shell out 300+ on something that is anything less than perfect, and be unable to return it because you were just 1 pixel short of the 7 dead pixel return policy?

... and I disagree completely. I'd been on TNs for a few years, and since I switched to IPS, it's "once IPS, always IPS" for me. I was really, really tired of the vertical color shift even when looking at the monitor from a perfect 90-deg. angle. Not even mentioning losing details in the upper part of the screen when just slightly moving my head down, especially when this upper part was dark anyway.

TN panels offer a reasonable color and decent viewing angles now, plus good response times and usually low input lag, and they are cheap. Once you go IPS however, IMO it's extremely unlikely you'll even consider a TN. I know I won't.

i have NO idea what you're talking about. looking at your monitor from a perfect 90 degree angle and there are verticle color shifts? pretty sure the color stays the same when my head is directly in front of the monitor. i will never look at the monitor from the top or bottom anyway, looking from the top down is just stupid and my desk is in the way. i've notice minimal darkening of the screen in my T240 when viewing off-center about 5 feet away

It is possible you just had a very bad TN, and not all are the same, but I know what you are talking about.
I know my TN is awful for colour shifts. It might be that some people don't even really notice the change in their monitor because they are fairly used to it and haven't had experience with a non-TN panel, or it might be that some are better than others and we both used particularly bad TN's.

The Samsung 2343BW is 23", but has a resolution of 2048x1152. It was designed to display two A4 pages side-by-side at 100%, so this might suit your purposes if reading text is your main activity. It's available under $300.

i'm using the Samsung T240 (TN) in conjunction with my Viewsonic VX2025WM (non-TN) and the t240 looks just as good or better.

The above is based on NEC 90GX2 and Samsung 226BW, so hardly "bad" TNs. I admit some TNs are indeed a bit better than others in terms of viewing angles but it just takes one look e.g. at Hardforums where it's apparent on every larger TN that the top part of the thread list is a noticeably darker grey than the bottom part. Since I have first-hand experience with all panel types, I still say "once IPS, always IPS"

When I was on TN, I thought "what the hell, I'm not staring at my monitor from the floor or ceiling anyway so screw the viewing angle". Now that I have a good IPS display, I realize how dramatic the difference is and how forgiving I actually was. Of course someone may disagree with me, but I'm willing to bet that 9 out of 10 people who argue about that have never really used an IPS panel
