Need 56K modem recommendation

I just picked up a second PC from work and need a modem for it. It is a Dell Optiplex (933 Mhz I think) with Windows 2000. I live in the boonies so my connections are not that great (usually 26400 with a USR 28.8 modem). I would use the modem I have now but it is ISA not PCI which is what the Dell has. Looking for something relatively cheap that will work well should the phone lines improve where I live. Thanks.

I think software modems have come a long way. If you're not a on-line gamer, I think any based on the Lucent chipset would do you fine. You can find them online for as little as $10.

If you're looking for a hardware modem, I recommend the US Robotics 2977 56K V.90. You can find them over at newegg.com for $40.

Any Lucent (LT) winmodem will do a very good job. Note that the newest of these may go under the name Agere instead of Lucent.

Go external - it is a better hardware solution and easier to manage. You don't have to recycle the computer to turn the modem on/off or clear the buffer. An external modem can also be used by more than one computer.

Before I got a cable connection, I would have said "USR hardware" all the way.
After getting a cable connection, I say get a cheapie Lucent 56k modem... it's just not going to matter that much.
However... I think a USR hardware modem may help with your line noise problem.

Decided to order the Blitzz winmodem from Newegg. There were not any reviews on it so maybe I'll do one after I get it installed. Couldn't see paying the extra $$ for a hardware modem but I'm pretty cheap anyway.

When you install the firmware from the CD check the version number. If it is 2.1.6.0 there is a newer one (2.1.12.0) @ www.Iblitzz.com.

I live in the boonies, too, and even after trying several modems I never connect faster than 14.4. The best performance (significantly quicker pages) is with a USR Courier External modem that I picked up on *bay for $25.00 - the best money I have spent in a long time! Try it if you can get one at a good price, you'll like it.....................
