Need a CDRW Pro to HELP!!! Acer 4x4x6 not recognized!!!

I'm trying to help out a buddy of mine with his external burner. It is an Acer 4x4x6 4406EU model. He has Windows 98 for an OS. I tried installing the original drivers, but there is no .exe file and nothing worked. I followed the instructions which told me to plug in the hardware and it should be recognized, but still no luck. I've ben to the Acer/BenQ website to get the latest drivers, but they also will not work. Any suggestions for me. Have any of you had this problem before with external drives? Please get back to me by PM'ing me. I check frequently.

I am guessing that its USB, which means even if doesn't work it still should be recognized as you plugged it in as a USB device. Does it have a power switch on the drive?

Plug the drive in, restart the computer, when it comes back up it should recognize new hardware, when it does, point it to the directory where the drivers are located (in windows 9x most drivers are not in .exe form) if that doesn't work, go into device manager (start -> control panel -> system -> device manager, find the usb device in the list (it should have a "!" next to it, and click the button to reinstall driver, point it to the correct directory, let it do its thing and restart, that should do it, if not check back in.

if what DaiShan says doesn't work, do a clean uninstall of everything and make sure the usb is unplugged. Then install the software, reboot, shut down, plug in usb, power up.

Seems a little lengthy and could avoid the reboot before shutdown, but I've seen progs not go in like they should except when done like this, maybe a slow proc which isn't recognizing the stuff till too late and then the conflict.

are you sure the usb port is functioning?
Look in device manager for usb it will probably be at the bottom of the list,

Yes, be sure to check that USB ports are enabled in the BIOS and installed and working per Device Manager--try a mouse or kbd as their basic functions should work w/o special drivers. I can't recall if there are separate files that have to be installed on Win 98 for USB to work or if that was the later releases of Win 95. Also, for best USB, be sure he is updated to Win 98SE. An SE upgrade disk can be had from various sites including 9Software.

This may seem like common sense and it works 4 me when my PC doesn't recognize any new hardware installation and is overlooked IMO. Add/Remove Hardware in Control Panel.
