Need a cheapish Laser printer that scans to email

Why is it so hard to find one?

Anyone knows of an HP laser printer (monochrome) that is smallish in size, cheap, as in less than 250, that actually scans to email via SNMP?

Probably because it is a function rarely used in the "cheap" market.

Look into the Canon Multifunction devices. They include scanning to USB or email. I think the black and white laser models start at <$300. We had the MF4900 and loved it. We upgraded to the 8300 color model so the kids can print artwork.

The printers themselves tend to be cheaper since the companies make their money on the print cartridges. Kind of a razor/blade model.

Thanks, Marc. The magic word was multifunction. That means a scanner is included. A plain laser printer does not scan. The other term in that vein is All-In-One or AIO. Maybe that is what OP should be looking at.

Do the Canons do email all by themselves? I don't deal much with them, but those I have, including the one right here, seem to scan to PC, then the PC software does the email part. If they can do it alone, are there any tell-tale signs in the list of features or specs for which do it that way?

Those definitely use the software for it. Scan to email adds an attachment to a new email that you compose.

Thanks guys, some of these may be an option. I dont think consumer level scanner/printers support SMTP or SNMP but some of these models may be good.

I'm pretty sure they do. I just used canons utility to scan to my desktop to email, so I never explored the email option in the menu.

I think that the required function is scanning to email by its own. That means that the printer should have an internal email client that can send scans over the network without the use of a computer. This feature is present on more expensive models.

Models like the Canon i-SENSYS MF4690PL do seem to support this, but they don't come cheap.

I'm not a user of such products, but I thought the consumer models generally were inkjet printers, not the far-more-economical laser models. Am I mistaken?

Aha, I made a mistake with my original model number, but the 4690 was the unit we had at home. My wife was working from a home office. It was $350 US about 10 years ago, so I figured it would have been cheaper by now. The print, scanning and copying capabilities were wonderful on this device, plus it was ver yeasy to splice into our home network to make it possible to easily print from any device.

It may be a little heavy handed for a casual home user, but if you do any measure of printing and need quality, this was a very solid, easy to use device.

It also came with network scanning and OCR (Character recognition) scanning software that allowed you to easily scan devices into word processing packages or other software to manipulate and save. I could turn a listener on at my pc, then scan a printout into my word processor directly...very handy.

Would a Brother HL-2280DW cut the cheese for you? I've got one, it was $80 from Fry's 2 or 3 years ago. It's at another house at the moment though.

I know I saw a scan-to-email option in its menu, but I never tried it. Not sure about your SMTP or SNMP requirements either, might be in the specs.

Toner's cheap, they pop up frequently on Slickdeals for around $12.50 a pop. Not genuine of course but I couldn't tell the difference anyway.

Maybe look at the Xerox WorkCentre 3215? It has email, a real ADF and of the glass. copying/scanning. Only negative I see is that it is mono only.

MSRP is 259, but it looks like you are buying multiple (30) for a business? If that is the case I'd recommend taking a look at a local VAR that does service and supplies. You'll find they'll go skinny on the printers, especially if you have any real volume on the printers for your office.

Source: I work for one of these VARs.
